Still Smells: 1976 Cadillac Castilian Estate

1976-cadillac-wagon-rear

We have featured a couple of these coach-built Cadillac wagons over the years, but none have been as nice as this 1976 Fleetwood! The seller claims that only 16 were ever built, but from what I can tell there are quite a few more than that out there. Im guessing that it is a Castilian Estate and that it was converted by Traditional Coachworks in California. The seller’s asking price of $18,000 seems steep, but it’s still cheaper than you could buy a new wagon for these days. Find it here on craigslist out of Rochester, Washington. A special thanks goes to Bryan L for the submission.

With only two photos it is hard to see the full grander of this full-sized family hauler. The Fleetwood was a big car to begin with, but when you grafted on a rear wagon section, it became a sight to behold. Few of these were ever built so it is nice to find one is what appears to be good condition. The market for something like was limited when new and for obvious reasons still is today. If I were in the market for a luxury vehicle with lots of cargo space and wasn’t concerned about gas mileage, this would be on the top of my list. Sure, you could just get an Escalade, but it would never bring as many smiles to your face as this big wagon could!

My Grandfather had a silver/red interior sedan deville same year that I was considering buying.
But with the 500 cubic inch engine I deemed it impractical. Even before the gas prices skyrocketed.
It sure did ride nice though.

    Let’s paint it pink! and:

I know some folks say, it’s too big, it uses too much gas
Some folks say it’s too old, and that it goes too fast
But my love is bigger than a Honda, it is bigger than a Subaru
Hey man there’s only one thing, and one car that will do
Anyway we don’t have to drive it, honey, we can park it out in back

this car needs to be listed for sale on ebay with a lot of photos and any paperwork the seller has. or for sale at a highline auction. love the car but 2 photos and a few words on CL does not = the asking price. very nice find.

My thoughts exactly, Jim. Slays me that people put huge prices on things, and then do nothing at all to back up the worth. Two crappy, space-limited photographs would not entice me to even go look at the car. This begs for viewing by a very wide audience, not just the local CL cruisers. And, it should be presented in a manner commensurate with the asking price.

Poorly represented, not enough info and only two pics.? Last time I saw anthing like this was in Georgia, it was home made from a Lincoln Limo. and looked bigger than the trailer where this hillbilly lived. The last time I was in Rochester I was picking up a set of modified heads for a friends SCJ Torino. I had to drive pretty far back into the woods to get there and this guy had some very cool stuff. All Ford high perfomance including two ’63 Galaxies with 427s. One was the early body style the other was the later style, both beatifully restored and of course not for sale. I wonder if that guy is still around?

Smells of what? I first thought it was a hearse on steroids with faint smell of embalming fluid.

I remember watching a newscast with my Dad one night somewhere between 1975-77 he died in 77, about a company that was converting Caddy’s into wagons. They also made an El Camino style conversion. I remember them pointing out the Elky conversion had a locking compartment behind the drs door made to fit a golf bag… Would love to find one of those now…
