We see a lot of potential projects filter through these pages, but every now and again, there’s a car that seems like an exceptional deal even compared to all the vehicles we look at. This rough 1982 Porsche 924 Turbo is a limited-production variant of Porsche’s front-engined sports car, and this one has supposedly been laid up since 2004. The seller looks like auto parts business, so perhaps they snagged it as a junk car pickup and prevented it from going to the scrap pile. Find it here on eBay for just $3,995 with the option to submit a best offer.
I’ve always been tempted by the turbocharged 924, as the increase in performance was significant over the standard 924. This was a legitimate sports car with Porsche basically re-writing the playbook as it related to their entry-level sports car. The NACA duct in the hood, the cooling gills in the nose panel, and the flat-faced polished wheels were all tell-tale signs this was a 924 that was closer in spirt to a 911 than a VW.
The 924 Turbo was also equipped with upgrades inside the cabin, such as these deeply bolstered sport seats and a custom gauge pod in the center stack. Incredibly, despite being laid up as a non-running project for many years, these components were never sheered off and sold. There was a time when it made far more sense to part a car like this out than to save it, so kudos to whomever kept it in one piece for all those years in storage.
The seller acquired this 924 Turbo without any keys, another tell-tale sign the junkman got the call to get rid of it. So, you won’t be able to easily deduct if it runs, but hopefully it turns freely by hand. It does have a clear title in hand, and that’s a far bigger hurdle to clear than cutting a set of keys. The seller makes it clear they are open to offers, so I suspect someone will jump on this quick since the current ask is worth the price of parts alone.
It’s a nice car. I’m a 924 guy and I’ve noticed that 90% of non-running 924’s for sale are not running because some clown thought it would be smart to rip out the emissions system.
This car along with the Flareside F150 had shown up on my Facebook video feed recently. The seller is at a salvage yard and some cars are obviously being saved.
These 924’s are the perfect cars for people that loath saving money.
With no keys, this is one risky proposition.
Are those stock wheels? Looks like they came off of a 928. It’s located about an hour away from Chicago, maybe they came off of a 928 that at one time was acting like it was a U-Boat.
Don’t think the wheels are original to the car but the 5 lug pattern is. Didn’t escape having parts taken off as the timing belt cover is gone and whatever that is just behind the expansion tank has a top gone. Could be a good buy or a bad one.
I have seen quite a few with these wheels, believe they were optional. The early turbos came with four lug wheels like a standard 924 and 5 lug and I believe rear disk brakes and a sport suspension optional, then I think all the later cars came with the five lugs and snowflake wheels or these as optional. These are pretty cool cars, but so e of the bits needed to make them run, including maybe the crank position sensor if I remember right, are NLS and hard to find.
I believe those were optional forged wheels.
I owned a new Turbo in 1982, I think I paid $20,000. I knew from the test drive, it was anemic, but fun. I had 427’s in the 60’s, so I know the performance this one lacks, yet I still recommend it.
Cute little sheepdog between the seats.
I had one a while back. Her name was Donna, cause she donna wanna run. She would run one Saturday per month and the rest of the time sat around eating $500 bill like they were candy… but when she ran, my oh my, what fun.
