Cheap Classic? 1969 Ford Fairlane 500

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

I was excited when I saw this 1969 Ford Fairlane 500, partially because it still had what I think are the original type “GT” wheels. After reading the ad, I was bummed to find out they don’t come with the car, and it will be sold on a plain set of steel wheels. However, it’s still an interesting find that’s being sold here on eBay, with bidding at $1,620 as I write and since there’s no reserve, it will find a new owner somewhere. The car is sitting outside (one of the seller’s reasons for getting rid of it) in Howe, Texas, so hurry up and bid and get it under cover somewhere!

The body, although basically solid, needs quarter panel repair and some dings and dents taken care of. I do like the look with this particular style of wheel, so if the seller can’t be persuaded to part with them I’d be looking for another set. It’s a little hard for me to believe that the nameplate “Fairlane” had been around long enough that this is the sixth generation! These clean looking hardtops were only produced for the 1968 and 1969 model years.

Based on the line on this side just in front of the rear wheel, it’s possible that this car has already seen some metal repair. But with these pictures, it’s a little hard to tell for sure. The missing trim across the back might be hard to come up with as well. It seems to me that Josh & Jesse had a hard time finding a piece of rear trim for their 1969 Torino that was similar to this, but I may be remembering wrong.

Ouch! Even if the outside has it’s share of bumps and bruises, it doesn’t look like this. Not only do all the soft surfaces look pretty bad, but the floor pans are said to be rusty and need replacing as well. You will probably also want to source a console to replace the missing one. I found a reproduction one here and nearly fainted at the price!

Power train wise, I have some better news, as the car is said to run and drive. The transmission is also said to be in working order, but of course the seller recommends checking out all systems before you drive the car further than onto a trailer–sound advice in my opinion. How low would bidding have to stay for you to be interested in this Triple F (Ford Fairlane Find)?

Cool car, but I don’t think it could be called a “Classic”…

Certainly a classic. This has what was called the Formal roof. Many available power plants and transmissions with very sharp body lines. I am not sure that it has a stock interior, maybe swapped seats and a floor shifter.

These are great cars for the money, but you can find more complete ones for the dollar than this one. One of the biggest issues is not too many parts are reproduced for the 68-69 Fairlane/Torino’s so you are stuck searching junk yards for trim pieces! You will never get the money back that this car needs. Also, the 302 is a solid engine but you are much better off with a 351 or 390 which gives a nice compromise between economy and performance.

Here is a 69 I picked up for around $4k out of Georgia that was all original and just needed some TLC. It came with factory 14″ wheels but I much prefer the body colored steel wheels and dog dish hub caps in 15″ and some decent rubber!!!

Sweet ride Kiwi! I dig the dog dish wheels! Great color for a great price! 69 was a great year for Detroit!

Had a 69 GT, 302 automatic. Hard car to park because you couldn’t see the rear bumper. It was a fun car to drive though.

The wheels are/were known as “12 slotters” in Australia. Available in many PCDs, even in a 13 inch 4 stud version. ( which looked lame)
A good wheel on Fords, on any thing else, no.

I had never heard those wheels called “12 slotters” before, but I haven’t ever lived in Australia either. The 13″ 4 stud versions must’ve been Aussie only production.

BTW; you aren’t the Chris from Aussie that drag raced in the states are you? Did you hang around Foy Gilmore Racing a few years ago?

From the Get Off My Lawn department. If you are going to sell, represent the car as the buyer is going to get it. If it comes with steelies, show it with steelies. The best of course, are on CL with the ads that have “What this car could be” as the lead picture, or “My car is not the car pictured, but it is similar”

Oh, I see you have moved off the lawn onto the sidewalk. Carry on.

Hard to understand why people advertise a car (picture) and then say something isn’t included.Once a guy told me the Cragers were his brother’s. don’t deal with these type of sellers.

Ridiculous, post a car for sale with some cool goodies and tell prospective buyers none of the cool stuff actually goes with the car. “1966 A/C cobra for sale, 427 4 speed with halbrands, none of these come with the car”…..??? Post up what IS for sale!! This will be a cool ride when completed!

My grand father bought one almost like this brand new in 68. Sold it to my sister in 71 she drove it to my younger brother in 72. He pulled the mother and trans. Rebilte the motor (302) 512 lift cam 11.5 pistons hi rise intake 4 barrel carb. Added top loader 4 speed and then put a ford truck straight Axel under it. It was bad to the bone. Put about 500 miles on it and wreak it (spun it in to a ditch).
