Cheap Classic: 1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra

Leading a life of adventure can be a great thing, but there are times when it isn’t. The latter scenario would seem to be the case with this 1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra. Not only has this limited-edition classic been the subject of a color change, but it has also done its own impression of a star of the classic film “Gone In 60 Seconds.” It was stolen early in its life but has been recovered and has generated plenty of interest since it was listed for sale here on eBay. The Ford is located in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and with bidding currently sitting at $12,000, the reserve has been met.

When the Cobra was shiny and new, it was finished in Vibrant Red. Someone has chosen to subject the car to a color change, and it seems that they were reasonably thorough in this process. There is little evidence visible of the original color, with areas like the door frames and engine bay also receiving the treatment. There is some poor making around a couple of the decals, while the rear floor and spare wheel well remain finished in Red. The owner states that the vehicle is rust-free, and there is nothing in evidence in the supplied photos. The car was stolen when it was relatively new, but it was recovered mostly intact. The person who owned it then fitted some aftermarket body additions, and the current owner has been trying to right these wrongs. He has managed to source an OEM front bumper cover and grille insert, along with a set of wheels. There are still some additions in evidence, so the buyer will need to source replacement parts if the car is to present as it did when it was new. The seller has also chosen to leave the front bumper and grille in primer. He says that he has done this so that if the buyer decides to return the Mustang to its original color, they won’t need to strip paint off what are new parts.

The interior of the Cobra is showing the average amount of wear that you might expect in a vehicle of this age, and it is certainly serviceable. The first thing to note is the seat upholstery. The owner holds a Mati Report and SVT Certificate, which verify the authenticity of this classic. These raise an interesting question because it is no surprise that these indicate that the seats should be upholstered in Opal Grey leather. These have been changed to cloth at some point, but it isn’t clear why this occurred. Replacement leather covers are available, but they will leave no change from $1,000. The carpet shows some wear and fading, the door pockets are sagging, and some of the plastic shows deterioration. However, the dash looks to be excellent, while there are no issues with the leather-wrapped wheel. Apart from the seats, the only apparent aftermarket addition is a CD player in place of the original AM/FM radio/cassette player. The car comes nicely equipped, with the only non-functioning item being the power locks. Otherwise, we find ice-cold air conditioning, power windows, a power driver’s seat, and power mirrors.

The SVT Cobra brought very respectable performance to the table in 1993. This was courtesy of some significant upgrades to the fuel-injected 5.0-liter V8 that rested under the hood. This benefitted from upgrades to the intake, the cylinder heads, and the exhaust. There were other more minor improvements, and the engine was said to officially pump out 235hp. Many enthusiasts consider this figure to be on the conservative side, with numbers around 255 often suggested by those in the know. The result was a car that was capable of storming the ¼ mile in 14.5 seconds. Suddenly the Mustang was a car that was offering its owners some serious performance figures. This pony’s ponies find their way to a Traction-Lok rear end via a 5-speed manual transmission. The owner says that the Cobra has recently been treated to a new flywheel, along with a clutch kit. It is roadworthy and is ready for a new owner to drive and enjoy.

The bidding history on a classic car can often tell an interesting story. That would seem to be the case with this ’93 Mustang SVT Cobra. Seeing bidding run into double figures is not that unusual, but to find a car where the bidding has hit triple figures is a rarity. That is the case here because 101 bids have already been submitted. With the information you have at your disposal, would you be willing to join the bidding war?

I speculate that this Cobra was initially found by law enforcement in a “Chop shop” with the bucket seats, wheels and tires and exterior body parts missing.

I thought these were turbo 4 cylinder engines.

You’re thinking SVO Mustang, this is an SVT.
