Cheap Roller: 1963 Chevrolet Impala

The second generation of the Chevrolet Impala was a brief run, lasting from 1959 through 1960, but it’s considered iconic for its unusual rear-end styling, with those unusual batwing tail fins.  When the third generation was introduced in 1961, the car was placed on a different platform and restyled a bit more conservatively.  However, it still offered good looks all around, even in four-door form.  This 1963 Chevrolet Impala here on eBay is a rolling project, but the owner believes he’s priced it accordingly, although the opening bid of $500 hasn’t lifted the reserve yet.  This one’s in Everest, Kansas, and we’d like to thank reader Mitchell G. for sending in the tip here!

The first items on the buyer’s shopping list will be an engine and transmission, as this Chevy is missing both.  As long as the price remains reasonable, this would probably be a good score for someone who already has a combo that’s waiting for a car to go into.  Having to source these components might add enough extra expense to make this one not worth the effort financially, especially given the other work that will be required here.  However, I could see this one becoming a fun sleeper, should you happen to have a rather large V8 at your disposal.

Fortunately, this Impala appears mostly complete on the outside, and it seems fairly stock except for those Keystone wheels.  Some of the panels appear to still be in decent condition, but others are reported to have rust, with the rockers specifically noted as needing replacement.  Both the hood and trunk lid are noted as bad, and there is also corrosion on the floors and trunk pan, so plan to make a few sheet-metal repairs as part of this project.

Perhaps one of the stronger areas here is the interior, and while it’s far from perfect, most of the items may be in decent enough shape to retain for just a cheap driver.  There’s no radio, and one of the three aftermarket gauges is also missing, but the dash itself doesn’t look all that bad.  Given all the needs facing the next owner, I’m thinking somewhere between the current bid of $500 and the buy-it-now price of $3,200 would be a reasonable amount to pay here, though that’s a pretty wide spread.  As it sits, how much would you be willing to shell out for this 1963 Chevrolet Impala?

I really like the ’63 Chevy best from its generation. All the points and edges really come together. Hardtop 4-doors are a less seen today. Maybe someone will fix this one up.

I had a 1964 four door I bought when I was 15, first car. I gutted it welded the rear doors closed had and upholstery shop a family friend own make me a rap around seat for the back shaped like a horseshoe. Put bucket seats in front a 396 with a four speed painted it sky blue and for almost a year I had the coolest car in high school in 1973. We were leaving a concert and the wipers would not work and it was snowing. So me being me I ripped out some speaker wire tied a them to each arm and me and my girl had wipers again pulling them back and forth We made half way and smoke started from under the dash. Pulled over as we there on the side of the highway I watched my work burn to the ground.
