Clean And Solid: 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback

When it comes to clean and solid project Mustangs that possess a world of potential, this 1965 Mustang Fastback really has to be one of the best. This is an incredibly solid and clean car, and the only rust that the next owner will need to tackle is surface corrosion. The Mustang is located in Littleton, Colorado, and is listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding has now jumped to $18,800, but the reserve hasn’t been met.

There are times when you look at a potential 1st generation Mustang project car, and you start adding up in your head just how many replacement rust panels that you will be buying for a particular car. Well, it doesn’t look like there will be that concern with this car because it is as clean as a whistle. The owner provides this YouTube video which shows every aspect of the car. All of the usual spots such as floors, frame rails, torque boxes, rockers, and lower quarter panels, are close to perfect. There is surface corrosion in a few spots, but it is really no more than scale and should be easy to address. In addition, the panels look straight, all of the gaps look consistent, the glass is all good, and the Mustang wears a shiny new pair of bumpers. The Mustang is also fitted with a nice looking set of aftermarket wheels, and those stay on the car when it sells. In addition, the original wheels and hubcaps are also included.

Powering the Mustang is a 289ci C-Code engine, which is hooked to an automatic transmission. The Mustang is also fitted with power steering and disc brakes. You would really think that we might be due for some bad news, but there really isn’t any to speak of. The previously mentioned YouTube video shows the engine starting and running, and it sounds sweet and clean. It looks like there might be a gasket that’s weeping in the automatic transmission, but it has done little more than leave a light coating of fluid on the transmission pan. The owner does say that the carburetor could do with a rebuild, but the car is essentially good enough to use as a driver now.

Even the interior doesn’t look bad, and it could certainly be used as it is. The car was fitted with aftermarket air conditioning by its original owner, but this doesn’t currently operate. There is an aftermarket radio/cassette player mounted in the dash, but thankfully, the dash hasn’t been cut to fit this. In further good news, the original radio is sitting in the trunk, and it will go with the car. The covers on the seats look reasonable, but I do see some wear in the ones on the front seats, and wouldn’t mind betting that these will need replacing at some point in the future. Frankly, I’m sitting here looking at these photos, and all that I want to do is get in and give the interior a good clean. I suspect that it would respond quite well to that.

When it comes to solid restoration projects, this Mustang just has to be up there with the best of them. The next owner is not going to be faced with a mountain of cutting and welding, and it looks like it should be a straightforward cosmetic restoration. Even better, the car really looks like it could essentially be driven and enjoyed immediately, and the restoration work could then be tackled when time and circumstances allow it. This really is a car that is worth serious consideration.

dang, didn’t know there were any of these left.
living in the rust belt we forget about the benefits of an arid climate and Western Colorado is about as good as it gets without the extreme sun and heat of the desert.
of course i’d prefer a k-code and/or 4-speed but this beauty i’d buff out and make it a driver.
    love the wheels!

It’s funny you said 4 speed. I actually have a 1965 mustang fastback 2+2 289 4 speed. It’s Caspian blue with white interior. I even have the purchase paperwork that she traded in a 1955 ford to buy the mustang. I hope to restore it someday.

Looks close to turnkey. I like the look with the faded paint and torque thrust wheels. Get the bugs out and motor!!! Good luck to the new owner!

Looks like a 260 ci engine. I had a 65 with the 289 and the valve covers were the color of the air cleaner on this engine. The other air cleaner shown is probably the correct one and it is blue for the 260 engine.

There’s no such thing as a 260 Fastback. Just fyi. No 64 1/2 Fastbacks either.

Another one of my personal favorites. Agree wholeheartedly with poseur on the color and the wheels. Price may be high, but you’d be paying for all the things you DON’T have to do to this car.

    Great find.

Love the color. No 4 speed, no sale. More a promo for seller’s business than a explanation of what you might be buying. Seems to work for him.

What are you talking about? If you watch the video he explains he’s closing up his business. He’ll have no problem selling a rock solid 54 year old car that someone can do a trans swap on if they’d prefer.

Ummm……is what I said unclear? Yes you see the car and its a great video. Most of the voice over pertains to everything but this car. So where is the confusion in your mind? As the bid price is climbing it’s obvious he wont have much trouble selling the car. I just prefer cars with manuals. Swapping the tranny kind of undermines the originality factor, imho.

Sold my 2+2 back about 2006 with a 69 351 and a 3 speed floor shift. Through in a 4 speed, disk brake swap and a complete 8″ posi rear end for $8500. A driver in original paint…..don’t wish I had it back – it had been stolen twice in the 80’s !

It doesn’t get much better than this. The car and presentation. Everyone give this guy a round of applause for that amazing video. If only every car listed for sale online had a video even half as good, the online car buying world would be a better place.

Back in 1966 during the Vietnam War, I spent about a year in the jungle with the Black Lions, and the next 8 months in a military hospital in Japan recovering from wounds and another 3 months in Valley Forge Military Hospital for rehab. The down side, I would never be a swim suit model, the upside was that I had save enough money being out of circulation to buy a car. I saw an ad for 2-year-old Red 65 Mustang K code Hi-Po 289, 2+2 Fastback with 4 speed and a white interior and I jumped on it. I loved that car and along with all the speed and styling was a fact I don’t hear many people talk about. The rear seats folded down to provide added hauling or boinking space. I hit my head on the sloped rear window many times. Hey, I was young, single and still alive, I was just making sure everything still worked properly. It is one of my cars I still regret selling along with my 55 Austin Healey 104.

I too thank you for your service. America was slow to recognize the errors of the 60’s in Vietnam. I lived through that era, I was in the first year of the draft lottery and got #223. They went to #190 that year. I remember in High School they would read the names of the dead from the school. I’ll never forget that……………. you sir deserve any car you want . ………………

Thank You For Your Service Kinmont Willy! God Bless America! I once owned a Barracuda Fastback and spent many nights “camping” out back!
