A beautiful 1976 BWM 2002 in Granatrot Metallic paint is coming to us from Vermont. Listed for $20,000 on Craigslist, this driver is ready for some canyon cruising. Thank you to Mitchell G. for sending in this tip!

Each car manufacturer has at least one model that sits at the pinnacle of their respective summits. Many would argue that this is the 2002 for BWM. Not only that, many would say that this diminutive Teutonic masterpiece was the car that fully ushered in the legitimacy of sports cars in America when the American fire-breathing behemoths were still cruising boulevards across the country. Capitalizing on the trend of sticking a big motor into a smaller car, BMW took their 2.0L and placed it into the 1600 model, and the 2002 was born. Once upon American shores, automotive enthusiasts were captivated by the 2002’s handling and power, and soon, the BWM was at the top of automotive best-of and wish lists. Car reporters raved about the car (check out this great Road & Track article from 1968), and BMW was officially on the map and off to the races.

The 2002 is not a flashy car, which is part of its charm. The seller of this particular Bimmer says that it is “in very good daily driver condition.” There are just a few small pictures in this ad, but based on what I’m seeing, this is much nicer than any classic daily driver I have ever seen called that! This model is painted in Granatrot Metallic, one of the rarer 2002 colors, and has a sunroof, which also takes it into the rarer realm. This car wears the shade of dark red well, especially over the e30 bottle cap wheels (original wheels included). The interior has upgraded seats and looks to be in fantastic condition. While there are no pictures of the undercarriage or engine, the seller states that this 02 has upgraded Koni shocks and a Weber carburetor, which should help in the overall performance of the car.

2002s will always have a special place in the automotive world. This model for sale would be a great entry for anyone looking to get into classic European sports cars. Not only are they reliable, but they still handle and drive exceptionally well. These cars will only continue to go up in value and have not reached vintage Porsche-level money yet, so it is a great time to purchase a fine example if you are so inclined. This car for sale would suit that perfectly. Check out this 2002 here on Craigslist and find out for yourself how these cars made BMW into “The Ultimate Driving Machine.” Thank you again to Mitchell G. for sending in this tip.  Please keep them coming!

Wow, the guy in that 1968 Article sure brags alot for a car with 115 Horses, not so sure he’d be blowing that many cars off the road.

Not on the straightaways, but you’ll lose them in the twisties! (I know, I’ve owned 2: a ’76 like this, and a ’74 tii).

        “It’s too heavy
to do in a Porsche just for kicks.
We’d take him in the quarter mile,
but he’d probably lose us in the long run.”

The 2002 only weighed just over 2000 lbs. This was pretty much state of the art in the early 70’s. They do just fine. And if you’re power hungry you can put in a cam and a pair of DCOE Webers and make around 160 hp easily. I had one that had a TI/SA head and cam, 45mm Webers 13:1 Venolia pistons and made almost 200 hp. It did the 0-60 in six seconds flat. It was in the 13’s in the quarter. Nowadays that doesn’t sound amazing but in 1974 it was pretty strong.

So, all that matters about a car is it’s amount of “horses”?

Change out those silly large American market bumpers and replace the 1986 325i wheels and s/b good to go.

The copy suggests, twice, that this is from a little-known car company, BWM.
