Cobra Jet Sportsroof: 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Over the years, Ford has produced some bold styling. I think the Mustang Sportsroof is one of those cars. It is unique, elegant and beautiful. With the half vinyl top, this car really accents the fast back design of the 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1. We appreciate Kevin bringing it to you attention. The car is listed here on Craigslist for an asking price of $34,800. The car we just listed 2 days ago and is located in Everett, Washington just north of Seattle.

The car is said to be a 65k mile unrestored Mach 1. The saddle interior looks practically new and unmolested. The exterior color is Medium Brown Metallic known as Code 5H with a ginger knit interior. The Mustang is equipped with power front disc brakes, power steering, dual racing mirrors, tinted glass and dual exhaust. The Mach 1 sports interior came with high back bucket seats, the gauge package, wood grain door panel inserts, color keyed floor mats, and a rear seat ash tray.

Under the hood is a Q code 351 cubic inch Cleveland V8 engine fed through a 4 barrel carburetor. This engine combination was known as the Cobra Jet package and rated at 266 horsepower. The engine is backed by a 4 speed manual transmission with a factory Hurst shifter. The rear end ratio is 3.50 to 1 and the car is said to be equipped with the competition suspension. While not comparable to a Pontiac Trans Am or Chevrolet Corvette, the 1973 Mustang Mach 1 did handle nicely and road well due to its long wheel base.

The seller states that only 363 cars were built with this trim code and paint combination. The car is said to have 4 owners since new. Several pieces of original documentation including the MSRP sticker, build sheet and warranty book come with the sale of the Mach 1. The seller includes several detailed pictures and a history of the car. The wheels are said to be original Ford issue wrapped in new BF Goodrich Radial TAs.

Brown always seems like a kinda boring color, but this car pops, in my opinion. I would drive it!
The stick shift makes it even more appealing.

Wyoming owner saw no need for
trac-lok axle option on those open highways 🛣
    Cool Ford.

The poster child for back-up cameras.

I’ve never driven one of these, but I bet that from the driver seat, the rear window looks like a mail slot.

I had a 71 and yes the rear window is basically useless anything small and low behind you is invisible and the rear view mirror is only good for looking at yourself LOL

It does, but you get used to it. I remember first time driving mine. Not sure what to compare it to other than a van at the moment. There were plenty of them long before back up cameras. You just learned to use your mirrors. Not that bad but sure could have been better.

Beautiful. Perhaps a little bloated by these years, but what a road trip car!

I had a 72 that had a 429 stuffed in it. Lots of mods. This looks to be one sweet ride. Hopefully it finds a new home.

Love it , allways liked the 72 to 73 mustang just not as much as the 69 to 70. This one is one of the most elegant mach 1s I’ve ever seen . Wish it was in my driveway!

10x the price of the blue
convertible, 100% less aggravation. I’ll take the fast back Mach 1 any day.

Love this color combination, second best next to the yellow and black. It’s rare today to see one this nice and with these low miles. My father had a yellow ’72 Mach 1 new for ~30 yrs and 200k miles with original engine and tranny. Sold it in 2003 for more than he paid new!😂

The vinyl top just doesn’t work at all with this body style. Very nice Mustang overall!

I don’t know why Ford didnt make a wagon out of these. It would look a 209% better. Ugly ass cars.

Normally I’m not much of a fan of brown on performance cars, but in this case, and with these wheels, this looks very appealing. It has a very clean, very ’70s look about it. Perhaps because there is nothing approaching this look and feel available anymore. Hope it goes to a good home.

I special ordered a ’73 Mach 1 similar to this one in many ways. Mine was medium copper 5M but same interior. Mine did not have the vinyl 3/4 roof. I didn’t then or now like them altho they were popular at the time.

It was a Q code 4 sp (only combo you could get 4 sp that yr). No ram air available on 4V engines due to Ford trying to fool the emissions folks in the Fed.

On the rear end, as said “A” denotes open 3.50. Something to note/research – I had a 3.25 LS rear; something I didn’t know until later was that mine was a 28 spline 9″. You didn’t get 31 spline axles until 3.50 ratio. Is that the same for open rear ends? IDK the answer but something to look into if it means something to you.

The color combo – seller states “363 built with this paint / trim code combination”. Maybe so, but I remember another local ’73 Mustang with that exterior color, so don’t think it was that rare. And the interior color was not rare and same as mine. Mine was ordered w/o a radio, so if you went down the list of options and how many were done that way maybe could get to “1 of 1”. The color options by themselves are not rare.

My car is long gone but I do take interest when I see another one similar. Seems kinda pricey to me, but I’m remembering $4200ish msrp and ~$3900 OTD at my local Ford dealer that yr. I remember the salesman told me that he had someone wanted to buy it off the transport truck for full price when it came in.

That engine was anemic by ’73 but it sure could roast a set of rear tires all the way down the block lol. Fun times.
