Code 50 Solar Gold: 1978 Pontiac Trans Am

This 1978 Pontiac Trans Am is located for sale in Tamworth, New Hampshire. It is listed for sale here on eBay with a Buy  It Now Price of $9,500 or the option to bid on the auction which expires tomorrow. The car is currently bid to $4,200. The car has a lot of positive points but a close inspection indicates that this is clearly a project car that will need some work. The car is painted in Code 50 Solar Gold which is confirmed by the data tag located on the upper cowl. This does not appear to be a Y88 Special Edition model because it does not have gold Fisher T-Tops.

Pontiac offered three different engine options in the 1978 Trans Am. The base engine in 1978 was the L78 400 cubic inch V8 (180 horsepower, 310 lb ft torque, automatic only) and California Trans Ams received the L80 403 cubic inch V8 (185 horsepower, automatic only, for California residents). Also, a buyer could order the W72 400 cubic inch V8, which came with either an automatic or 4-speed transmission. The W72 engine received new dual exhausts compared to 1977, boosting its horsepower from 200 in 1977 to 220 in 1978. This car is equipped with a 400 cubic inch Pontiac engine and is most likely the lower horsepower L78 version based on the air cleaner assembly having the smaller neck. The seller states that the engine has been rebuilt and drives great.

The interior of the care is black but hosts 1979-1981 custom deluxe seats from a Trans Am. The correct cloth interior for a 1978 Trans Am was not the worn hobnail fabric in the pictures but rather and consistent cloth for 1978. The door panels of this car indicate that the car came with the standard interior unless they have been changed like the seats. The dash bezel insert is also gold and should be silver unless this is a Y88 Special Edition. From looking at this car, I don’t think it is a Y88 Special Edition because it does not have Fisher T-Tops. As far as options, the car has power windows, air conditioning (missing the compressor) and an automatic transmission.

Pontiac produced 1,267 Y88 gold special edition Trans Ams in 1978. This car is riding on 15×8 aluminum snowflake wheels which came with the WS6 Special Performance Package which featured improved handling including, special shocks, larger diameter sway bars and a better steering turning ratio. The seller states that the car has some rust in the floor boards and there is bondo in the lower quarters. The car will need body work also to repair the dent in the front fender and the peeling paint on the hood.

Color me amazed, finally someone that doesn’t think that one of these dogs is worth 30 or 40K. I will refrain from commenting further as I do not wish to infuriate the Trans Am folks.
