Colonial Yellow Project: 1978 Chevrolet K5 Blazer

One of the more memorable listings I can recall for a Chevrolet K5 Blazer in yellow involved a very nice truck that went for over $80,000 in the supercharged market of 2022. The truck was nice, for sure, but it still stunned me to see the number go that high. These days, normalcy has returned to most collector car auctions save for the absolute best examples, which is why this driver-quality 1978 Chevy Blazer listed here on eBay is offered for a very reasonable $13,900. The seller notes it is not a show truck, but it does come with a new crate engine and patched floor pans.

The color doesn’t look quite factory to me, but it could be some bad editing or a filter on the photo. Colonial Yellow typically looks a bit softer while this clearly has some pop to it. The seller does call it an “amateur restore” and notes that the paint has fisheyes, so quality is suspect for sure. Regardless, it’s still a great color combo, and the listing notes that you can still swap on the OEM Rallye wheels which are included with the sale. I would absolutely do that on a set of all-terrain tires, as it would look fantastic. I might also suggest a modest lift kit to give it slightly less “raked” appearance.

The seller goes so far as to call it a “rough old driver” which almost seems too harsh to me. It doesn’t look that bad, but I also recognize that things can look better in photos. The carpets appear to be in decent shape and while there are some rips and tears in the seats and the center console, it’s all serviceable. The paint on the lower portion of the dash does look like Colonial Yellow, so it’s clear in this photo that the yellow used in the respray is a fair bit brighter than stock. Shockingly, the door map pockets don’t appear to be sagging and the wood trim around the instrument cluster is intact.

The seller notes that the floors have previously been patched, which I consider a good thing – isn’t a plus to have that work already done? But some people may interpret it to mean this truck spent time in the rust/snow belt, and that could scare them off. The replacement 350 engine was swapped in over the last few thousand miles, so you’ve got a relatively fresh drivetrain already installed. Further evidence of the original Colonial Yellow finish can be seen in the engine bay. Overall, there’s a lot to like here, and I think the seller’s asking price is more than fair. Do you agree?

I don’t hate the brighter yellow, but I do hate that it’s obvious the instant the doors or hood are opened.

Looks pretty good, and further along than the 79 I picked up last year and started fixing up. I up to about 15k on my K5, but needed to work up to it in order to sneak it passed the finance office (my woman).
