Completely Original: 1968 Mustang GT Fastback

This 1968 Mustang GT Fastback ticks a lot of the right boxes for the person on the hunt for a 1960s classic. It wears its original paint and interior, it has never had any rust issues, and it is a numbers-matching car. It has generated plenty of interest since it has been offered for sale because, at the time of writing, there are 196 people who are watching the listing. Barn Finder Patrick S spotted the Mustang for us, so thank you so much for that Patrick. It is located in Woodruff, South Carolina, and is listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding has now reached $45,100, and with the reserve having been met, this is a car that is set to head off to a new home.

The Mustang is said to be wearing its original Sea Foam Green paint, and if this is true, then it has survived remarkably well. The owner says that not only is there no rust to be found anywhere in the vehicle, but it has also never had any rust at any point in the past. The wheels that are currently fitted to the car aren’t original, but they suit the car quite nicely. However, the original wheels, caps, and tires are included in the sale. The external trim and chrome appear to be in first-class condition, as does the original tinted glass. This really does look like an extraordinarily clean survivor.

Ford introduced the 230hp, 302ci J-Code engine into the Mustang range exclusively for the 1968 model year, and that’s precisely what you get in this car. It is numbers-matching, as is the 4-speed manual transmission. The owner states that the car runs and drives really well and that it comes with a very healthy collection of documentation. This includes the Warranty Card, Window Sticker, Ordering Documents, both Build Sheets, Owners Manual, both trim inspection tickets, electrical inspection ticket, and the original title issued to the car. An original and unmolested Mustang with such great documentation is just looking better by the minute.

The impressive presentation of the Mustang continues when we open the door and slide behind the wheel. The Deluxe Ivy Gold interior trim is said to all be original and is in really nice condition. There is some fading on the driver’s seat and a slight alignment issue on the console, but there really isn’t much else to be critical about with the trim. The Mustang features the Sport Deck rear seat, a console, AM radio, front headrests, and a tachometer and trip meter.

Finding an original and rust-free first-generation Mustang today is becoming more difficult, and this one looks like a real beauty. There is very little to be critical about with this car, and it is easy to see why it has attracted so much attention. Do we have any Barn Finders who are looking seriously at bidding on this beautiful classic?

The best design of any Mustang up to this last generation of the 2000s. Early cars were good looking but not striking like this car. ’69 comes in second but Ford must have fired the designers after that model year. this is a beautiful car!

1967, ‘68 and ‘69 fastbacks were the best Mustangs. The ‘69 is my personal favorite, but I’d grab this baby in a heartbeat if I had the scratch.

I had a 68 Mustang fastback ( non GT) with a 289/4 speed. The did not have power steering or brakes, but it didn’t need them. If I remember correctly the car only weighed 2800 lbs. And, yes, I wish that I kept that car.

No it doesn’t. If you look at the window sticker it doesn’t list them

No, but it has a smog pump, that should count for something.

Lack of power steering and brakes aren’t that big of a deal. This is a small block car, it’s not a nose heavy pig. I have a 1970 Nova with manual steering and manual drum brakes, with the light engine, big steering wheel and radial tires it isn’t a chore to drive.

Sweeet Pony- I thought the GT came with the 390 but I stand corrected. Obviously someone plunking down 45 large would send an inspector or inspect themselves to make sure its the real deal. If it is, wow! Just a caveat emptor from this grey haired buzzard who has fought rustangs his whole life! Good luck to the new owner!!

I love the 67 / 68 fastback Mustangs but 45K is too rich for my blood.

The best year/model of Mustang ever produced IMO! Puts the modern versions to shame. Who would buy a new one when one like this is up for grabs?
Love how the tint of the windows goes with the paint. Can’t think of a Ford or any car as far as that goes, that doesn’t look even better when the Magnum 500 look is applied.

I agree it’s a beautiful car but we sold our 70 Mach1 which was fully restored and bought a 2012 GT/CS with the coyote 5.0 and a 2006 standard v6 Mustang for everyday driving and while the styling was better back in the early days the newer ones will run circles around them with much better handling, even the 2006 v6 I would match against any early Mustang with a 302 minus maybe the Boss 302. It even gets better after buying and paying cash for both we still had over 10K left in the bank from the 70 Mach1 sale.

      End of an era.

      Wow, just Wow.
Never was a big Ford muscle car fan except for Shelby’s influence and I’m not fond of the color but this defines survivor for me.
      Someone is about slide into
      one cool ride.

OK pulling out the soapbox, I apologize up front but I feel a rant coming on, this post struck a chord for me, a musical chord.

I may be wrong here on barn finds demographics, but I am guessing most of us were fortunate enough to grow up in what I am defining as the “Definition of cool period”.
Sub titled as the “Blissfully ignorant period”.

Heck we were the first gen to have widespread indoor plumbing and HVAC!

Late 50s to the late 70s.

I would argue this was an amazing time to grow up in America, how blessed were we?

We couldn’t wait to play outside, mosquitos and ticks weren’t an issue. Emissions and climate change weren’t even on our radar, gasoline, burning rubber, drive ins and music were.

Regulations for the most part an issue, we wrenched and modded with abandon to the best music ever. Period. The Stones, The Who, Beatles, pick you faves but I bet they come from this period. I feel sorry for later gens, and sorry but their music milleniate drivel sucks.

We were blessed, I appreciate having grownup in this blessed time.

Homan/Moody front license plate belongs on a 428 powered version, or would make more sense, maybe an ultra rare tunnel port 302, got to have something serious to wave that flag.
Nice looking car for show and shine, occasional driving but expect every kid in town to be challenging with their latest-greatest modern day screamer. It can get old…getting your doors blown off.

To be original, it should have had the nickle plate wheels with the GT caps on it so it is not original. JMHO

Yeah, Magnum 500’s were added and not original to the car. Having a really hard time believing that’s original paint as well, but crazy things do happen. However, I don’t think panel alignments and gaps were that nice in 68 either. Could’ve had a repaint in the 80’s or 90’s or something. Either way, very nice and that’s a really rare color.

I still marvel at these people that bid on cars based on a couple of pics, none of which include the undercarriage. Unless they’re going to look in person.
