Cotton Approved: 1977 Dodge D700 Car Hauler

We love old trucks here at Barn Finds, and fortunately for us, so do our readers! Barn Finds reader Charles H. spotted this cool, custom car transporter here on eBay with an ownership history that includes the original visionary for the build: NASCAR legend and team owner Cotton Owens.

This truck combines a 1977 D700 cab with a 1980 Club Cab section attached atop an extended frame. The final product appears downright factory correct in execution, although the cardinal red interior may be too much for some. Still, with a manual transmission paired to the 413 engine, this hauler seems eminently capable of comfortable cruising regardless of the blinding interior fabrics.

Old Cotton certainly knew quality when he saw it, eventually assembling a roster of cars and drivers that were some of the most recognized names in motorsports. His car transporter here has been in the hands of a few other owners with close ties to the industry, which may explain its overall pleasant condition – either of out respect for Cotton or simply knowing how much work went into creating this rig.

Although the Challenger on the bed is not for sale, the truck is the more interesting choice to me anyway. The GVW rating is 25,500 lbs., so the next owner won’t need a CDL license to enjoy it. With room for a car as well as other toys like an ATV or perhaps a few sets of tires for track days, this Dodge D700 car hauler is as practical as it is eye-catching. What would you transport with it?

Cool history from the days when NASCAR really had a great “Cast of Characters”
Twin 100 gallon fuel tanks, that’s quite a range even at 8 mpg!

What a nice truck, wish I could. It seems to have been updated w later model door panels and power windows. 1977 models did not have those door panels and power windows didn’t arrive until 1980 or so.

After years of looking at gray interiors, this one looks great to me.

I’d really like to have something like this because it’s both cool and practical. Trouble is, a heavy duty diesel pickup and car hauler trailer are even more practical. A Ram with the Cummins will get close to 20 MPG with a 6000 pound load on a level highway, and then you can disconnect the hauler and then use the pickup to haul people in a crew cab and stuff in the box. So unfortunately I don’t see something like this cool truck in my future.

This would be perfect for hauling skids of tile for my retail store and fun on the side

I haven’t seen one of these in years, this has already been heavily modified with that extended cab refit, so why not go farther. First loose the deck, second move the rear axle forward, third refit a 1 ton 8′ truck box on it with 5th wheel attachment, fourth pull that gas hog engine and replace with Cumins turbo diesel, and last repaint it cheery red over limo. black. You would have one kickass truck. That might even get descent mileage. Then you could pull a car hauler trailer with an RV section up front.
