Cream Puff Survivor: 1970 Mercury Marquis

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Apart from the Oldsmobile wheel covers (only on this side of the car) this 1970 Mercury Marquis could be a five-year old used car. It only has 51,000 miles! The seller has advertised it here on craigslist for $3,500, which seems pretty inexpensive considering the car’s cream puff condition. This huge Mercury is currently in Cudahy, Wisconsin.

Pretty classy looking front end! We’re told that all the lights work, so you can expect these swiveling doors to wake up and say “hi” when you switch them on. The paint certainly appears to be original and the seller states that the car has always been garaged. I’m guessing it’s been stored for a while until recently due to the list of mechanical work that has just been completed.

Even the vinyl top looks good. There’s what I think is a small dent in the trim on the left rear corner, but if that is stainless like I think it is you can patiently straighten it back out (or find a specialist to do it for you). There’s no mention pro or con of rust but I can’t see any.

One of the two real stars of this car is the interior, which looks phenomenal for its age. This car comes from the days when the main goal of the engineers was to isolate you from the outside elements; noise and bumps were things to ignore if possible. This is the Marquis Brougham four-door hardtop model, which according to this 1970 original ad featured “limousine-like quiet” and an “authorative” 429 cubic inch V8.

Speaking of V8s, here’s a picture of this one. It looks comfortingly original, and that two-barrel carburetor should help control gas mileage so that you at least get double digits. The car has recently received a new battery, brakes, tuneup, radiator and heater core flush as well as a set of new tires. The seller states it “starts and runs like brand new.” Sure, it’s not a muscle car, but think of the comfort you will feel as you cruise into the next car event you attend!

This is a beauty and presumably a great buy. Regarding the seats, I cannot remember what that type of material is called, but I would think cleaning it without fraying the material could be a real challenge. This one also came with the optional driver’s and passenger’s side specific full hubcaps.

I have a Colony Park and a Marauder both with factory hubcaps. I’ve never put one [hubcap] on a scale but would guess they would weigh about 6 -8 pounds each. Doesn’t take much of a bump to launch it off the wheel. Two more to match the ones on this car shouldn’t be to hard to find.

KS, I remember those (I worked at a Hub Cab Annie when I was in college and immediately afterwards). Good gosh they were heavy with those cast pot metal center fins. Unfortunately this car doesn’t have any of those so they’ll have to come up with four! I had to bend the clips on almost every one of those in order to get them to stay in position at all!

For basic motoring, this is a steal. And, the car has huge presence, with a big block to back it up. I like it.

All day long for this price. The smell of that interior horsehair or whatever it was to give off that old 60s-70s smell. This car won’t last long.

The caps on the drivers side look like base model caps. They might be from a Monterrey.

Everything about the Marquis was more fancy.

Wow, the car must really fly. It was on Appleton WI. Craigs last week for $1500.

Your right! I saw that ad too. Flipper looking to make $2k for a short drive. Too bad it didn’t develop a rod knock or have the trans go out during it’s short trip.
(If I sound bitter, it’s because I am. Sick of people who buy cars for the strict intentions of making money off of it.) Hasn’t BJ done enough damage???

My guess is that the big blocks in these cars (I”m guessing the weight is in the 5000 pound neighborhood) were probably set up in the gears for torque, as opposed to speed. With the right tyres on the rear, you probably have some tree stump pulling torque, but at the same time, that mighty 429 Ci will have no problem cruising at 90 all day long.

As long as the road stays straight, you see. : )

That is a whole lot of ugly for small money, but it’s a big-block hardtop and its pretty cool.

This would be great for Sis to use while
she saves up to buy the car she really
wants. As for fretting over the hubcaps,
just slap a set of wire wheelcovers on it
and call it a day. You’re looking at a
premium vinyl and jacquard interior here.
Or maybe even brocade. Both of these
were the in thing back in the ’60’s and
’70’s. These cars were true highway
cruisers that floated down the interstate
and lulled you into a semi comatose
frame of mind. If you get sleepy driving
this car, pull over. MAN, I LOVE THIS CAR!!

The seller is a classic car dealer in a suburb of Milwaukee. He actually has a pretty good reputation. They do restoration there too. A little costly for my wallet but again, good reputation.
I almost bought a car from him. While I was there looking at it, he received a call from another guy. We ended up in a bidding war over that car. I walked away. 5 years later, I befriended a guy @ a local bar. One day he told me he was moving & asked for my assistance. I agreed to help. When I arrived @ the house he was moving from, that car was there. I asked if he knew who owned it. He did. He was complaining that when he bought it, he had a bidding war with another guy for it & had to pay almost $1,000 more than he planned on lol.
Anyhow, the dealer is reputable. Big building, probably a lot of overhead. If someone would like me to go look it over, call me @ (414)940-1392.

Okay, I will do it. Steve McGarrett wants to know who painted his car brown. He had to have a car big enough for Kono to ride in the back seat.

Oh, just forget this guy, Miquel. He’s just a guy who stopped by to take a poop and move on. Useless, worthless comment.

We need more guys like him in the world. It’d be a much better place, don’t you agree?

went to the local Lincoln /Mercury dealer with my uncle as he received a call that his New Lincoln Town Car was in and on the show room floor for his inspection ( yes they did stuff like that back in the day ). We walked in and there were two cream colored cars on the show room floor , as we stood there checking the first one we came up to ,, the sales man came over and told my uncle that his car was over there and we were checking out a new Mercury Marques , that’s how nice they were .

These things weighed 5000 lbs or more.

Someone said with the 2 barrel you might get double digit gas mileage.

Guffaw !!! 3 miles to the gallon.

Buy it for the motor. Pull it out and stick it in a nice Torino. And dump the 2 barrel.

McGarret had a 1968 for many years then a 1976 for the final year. Weight was 4500 lbs on this one.

Mitch, 1974 was the newest Marquis they used on Hawaii 50.

The front end of the 1975 – 1978 models was very different.
