True barn finds can be great fun for those with enough skills and money to get them on the road again. But for those of us without those prerequisites, an affordable driver quality car may be the better option. This 1964 Triumph TR4 is a good example of a “credit card classic” with lots of work already done and an asking price of $4,750. Find it on Utah’s KSL classifieds.
The TR4 may have been considered a step backwards for some hardcore sports car enthusiasts. It was based off the aging TR3, but added roll up windows and a proper trunk. Sure, it made things more comfortable, but that wasn’t the point of a sports car anyway, was it?
As modern sports cars become more like luxury offering with each passing year, this Triumph may seem primitive today. The engine was based off a tractor design which had been around for years. It displaced 2138 cc and was good for a little over 100 horsepower. Nothing groundbreaking here, but it was durable and when combine with the TR4’s rack and pinion steering and full synchromesh transmission it was enough to be competitive in racing.
The seller of this TR4 informed us that they purchased it from the second owner who had stored it in his shed for over 10 years. They said that there are no fancy stories or amazing photos, but what they do have is what looks like drivable car at a fair price. They have already completed most of the work you would need to do on a barn find project. So does this take all the fun out of it, or make this one even better?

I loved these cars & the price is good to, put back the original seats & have fun. They did rust, but what didn’t, they have no fender liners, so road grime collected in the corners of the fenders. Buy it & have fun.
If I had the money and a place to put it I would buy it in a heart beat. Hope it goes to a good home. This is a true British classic…
If you read the ad on KSL the owner claims to have an entire separate rolling chassis along with other spare parts. Not a bad deal…

If this isn’t full of body filler or rusted out or a total scam………..the price is mighty fine.
Of course you can buy one already done and save your head from aching.
Had 2 of these along time ago, about 40 years ago. one was a 1964 and the other was a 1967. these cars are alot of fun. I think this is a steal, if it was closer to Florida it would be in my garage. Someone is gonna be lucky. But i do hope there isn’t much rust. Who ever gets it I sure do hope they enjoy it.
College friend had one of these that needed an engine rebuild. He and his dad did it over a summer and it turned out that Ford valves from something were a perfect fit, better quality and about a quarter the price. Even with the wind up windows it had a lot of British character, both good and bad. I thought these came through with SU’s, not Strombergs. I’ve seen one of these upgraded with Webers, etc, and it had a whole lot more than 100 hp. A strong engine as I recall. This is a good deal if there aren’t too many rust worms.
