Crusty Goat: 1970 Pontiac GTO

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Do you live near Norristown, Pennsylvania? That is where this 1970 Pontiac GTO is located and it is listed for sale with 2 days remaining in the auction. You can add you bid here on eBay which is currently up to 84 bids and a price of $5,401. The car is equipped with an automatic transmission and an aftermarket tachometer is mounted to the steering column.

This GTO appears to be a nonrunning but nice optioned car that has sat and been neglected for a long time. The exterior which paint is past the patina threshold and downright crusty. The interior is there but is dirty and will need a lot of work. The car is equipped with 1973 Pontiac bucket seats but the originals come with the car. This car has an aftermarket radio and air conditioning.

Under the hood is most likely a Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 engine that someone has added a tri-power carburetor set up. The seller states that a 4 barrel carburetor and intake manifold are included with the sale. There is not a lot of information in the description except that the car comes with a clean title and the odometer shows 80,000 miles.

It appears this GTO has been rear ended or the driver backed into a pole. The black vinyl roof has decayed and there appears to be quite a bit of rust around the rear window. The car retains its Rally II wheels and the purchaser will also receive a 1971 Pontiac Le Mans parts car. I wonder how long this car has been off the road.

    Tri-power on a 1970? Interesting…

They were easy to find at swap meets and relatively cheap for several decades. It was a fairly common swap for a long time, though more often onto slightly older GTO’s and first generation Firebirds. I bought several tri-power manifold in the 1980’s for $100, carbs were cheap as long as you didn’t care if they were specifically designed for the 3×2 setup.

It’s gotta be a parts car at this point.

The car looks pretty rough. But once again we’re at the mercy of yet another “gifted” photographer to decifer the real condition of the car.

Wouldn’t this one, being a GTO have had an actual in dash factory tachometer?

Also, one might wonder how fast he was driving in reverse when he hit that telephone pole . .

My Magic 8 Ball says this was Moms or Dads car and 16-yr old Johnny got his hands on it. Added the Tach to be cool to his friends cuz you can’t be a race car without one. Then he and his 2 friends got the Tripower at a swap. He flipped the air cleaner lid so it would Vroom louder and off they went for a showing off cruise. He squealed away from the red light in front of the girls, lost control, spun a 180 and slammed the rear into the telephone pole on the other side of the road.
