Custom Sedan Delivery: 1984 Ford Mustang GT

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

If any of you are into old racing cars of any denomination, you likely know of the one-off Ferrari 250 GT SWB called “The Breadvan” for its iconic rear bodywork that gives it small storage compartment between its massive rear fenders. It still races today and actually just wrecked at the Le Mans Classic in France, so it’s been in the news again as this priceless competition car will once again be rebuilt. For far less money, you could own the American version of this oddball profile with this custom 1984 Ford Mustang GT “Sedan Delivery” listed here on Facebook Marketplace in Florida for just $6,700.

What the European set calls a “breadvan”, we Americans have always referred to as a “Sedan Delivery.” I love that the seller refers to it this way, as it calls out the models of yesteryear that were not unusual for having the nose of a sedan model with the profile of a wagon. This body style proved quite popular for tradesmen and small businesses that needed the extra utility of a wagon but not necessarily the full-blown capabilities of a truck. The pictures aren’t great so we can’t lend any opinion to the bodywork done here, but I assume it’s completely one-off and not some obscure kit-based creation. Do you know if there was a company like Greenwood offering a wagon conversion for Mustangs in the 80s?

Greenwood, of course, provided the Breadvan treatment to Corvettes in the 1970s, and while not exactly priceless commodities today, they are sought after when found in good shape. This Mustang could be a total hackjob; it could be a very well done homemade conversion; or it could be the last of a very small batch of well-designed kit cars that sold in small numbers. If it’s not held together with paperclips and baling wire, I have to believe owning this would make you the talk of the town car show not to mention give your garage a fascinating addition with an enthusiast-grade muscle car that can haul more than a few bags of mulch. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Rocco B. for this fascinating find.

Yeah, Not a nice build. BUT! i have seen people take a fairmont wagon and put a Mustang nose on them.. Interesting. Guess if you had extra parts laying around…hummmmm, just makes an interesting weekend car show a bit more conversational

Images look like they were shot with a 1970 Polaroid Swinger. Then made digital by shooting the Polaroid with a 2008 flip phone camera. Then digitally stretched to several times original size.

The car? Well, if you Google “Fox body Mustang wagon”, not much comes up. So if there was a kit, few exist. Looks like someone’s backyard creation.

I have a soft spot for Mustangs and another for 2-door wagons, but this? Just no. It looks like someone grafted on a hacked-up truck cap. The worst thing about it is that it appears to have started out as a convertible.

contacted owner… i asked same ? re was it a convertible and yes it was… asked for more pix inside as just looks like sitting on trunk lid etc. etc. Nothing back yet. I am sure it is a truck cap as well… nice concept… execution … welllllllll

Leaves me to wonder did they set out to do this on purpose or were they trying to salvage their car from Hurricane damage because this took more than just a six pack of beer

Always wanted to take a Fairmont Futura or Zephyr Z-7 coupe, add a Mustang front clip and roof & tailgate from a Fairmont wagon. The B pillar from the Futura would give you the look of a Nomad. Musmad, or Notang?

A Mustang front clip won’t fit on a Fairmont body. The designers violated one of the design parameters and raised the cowl to give the hood more of a slope. I’ve seen photos of Mustang prototypes with the Fairmont cowl, and the designers were wise to raise the cowl.

I believe you’re correct. The LTD used the Mustang’s taller cowl for a more sloped hood and better aerodynamics.

      We had a ’78 Fairmont wagon.It was Black.When a drunk-
driver hit it & smash the rear driver’s side door,I considered
having the rear doors welded & cover the rear door seams,
& then cover the side windows behind the front doors & make
it a sedan panel. Then I’d finish it by buying a wrecked Mustang GT
      & swap all the parts.
The Mustang clip bolts right up to the Fairmont.

Congratulations! For whatever it’s worth, the creator managed to make Ford Pinto out of a Mustang. It’s right up there with another unique car that comes to mind, the Oscar Meyer Weiner Mobile.

Comparing this to a Pinto is an insult to the latter.

If you google ” Fox Mustang wagon” on google images , there are many good looking transformations people have done.

I can’t see any real redeeming properties on this creation. It was built from a notchback, which means you don’t likely have the benefit of the hatchback’s cleaner, open layout. The hinged lift-up rear lid looks like it’s just cobbled from a camper shell and the trunk lid doesn’t look like it’s attached or I believe it would’ve been molded in. All this means you might lift that little back hatch and find a gaping hole in the original space. Somebody with reasonable talent would’ve mated a Fairmont wagon greenhouse and floor since they’re both fox body. platforms.

Looks like a 3-row section of aluminum house siding hammered flat towards the sides. It IS a Florida ride.

One of the things I like about barn finds is learning. All these years I thought the breadvan was a GTO and now learned it was an SWB. Everybody thought this 330GT that I was working on was a GTO…looks are deceiving, especially with all the correct NOS bits and a coachbuilt alloy body.

“…“Fox body Mustang wagon”, not much comes up. …”
remove the wrd ‘stang’ and see my OE fox wagon ’83/6
LTD (3.8L) ora Marquis (not “Grande”) as that’s just what
    they are (grenade-a, cougar, fairmont/zephyr, came in waggy;
stang, Mark whatever, lincoln, bird other fox bodied – not panther
or crown vic – did not).
I agree w/ ’65’ it looks likea vega. There were 2 or 3 actual ford built stang s. wagons made. Ford dida better job than this guy w/side/back but have alot more resources at hand. This topper-ized stang is ok for what it is.

I bought this car from Peter. He dropped price to $3500 and I couldn’t resist. It goes well with my 2jzgte fairmont wagon. It’s a little rough around the edges but overall fairly well done. Interior is diy but totally fine imo. It’s a really fun car 302 5 speed with 2.47 gears it will spin the tires first gear for a block. It’s not fast and it’s not perfect but it’s in my opinion very cool. I’ve taken it on a few 100+ mile drives no issues. Have a sound system in it now and am working out the a/c. I love it.
