Cutaway Coupe! 1965 Corvette Project

Sidelined in the ’70s by an accident that left significant battle scars on the starboard side, this 1965 Chevrolet Corvette in West Creek, New Jersey seeks a new owner here on eBay. More than 50 bids have driven the market value above $15,000 in the No Reserve auction. The 300 HP 327 cid (5.4L) V8 is original, though the body has been transferred to another frame, presumably due to crash damage. The 1981 title shows a mere 18,000 miles!

The missing steering column and door panels, though removed, come with the sale. The seller graciously admits that the current transmission is not original, but the engine is numbers-matching. The birdcage structure will need some repair.

The engine compartment could easily support the claim of being parked since the ’70s, but it appears to have avoided the application of hot-rod parts. Even the air-cleaner housing looks factory.

The first C2 Corvette I saw up close was my Brother-in-law’s ’65. I was most-impressed with the four-wheel disc brakes and the independent rear suspension, the latter technology avoided by the Ford Mustang until 2015.

Showing a decided lack of ventilation compared to the right, the left side looks almost ready to go. This re-framed coupe with non-original transmission will never bring big bucks from collectors, but that’s good news for the hobby shoppers and potential buyers with time on their hands. You can have a lot of fun in this car when it’s back on the road. Where do you predict the bidding will end?

The comments already posted are spot on. Only I would have said the birdcage needing some work is “A REALLY big deal. The price is already to much for one of the little guys to dip a toe in. I also really hate that all the ebay bidders are hidden. That way it’s easy for the owner to keep bumping the price up. This is some thing I could take on, but the price is already to high for the amount of work needed just to turn it into a beater/driver.

I don’t know what everyone is talking about it’s beautiful, and I would love to have it, oh wait…… I was looking at the red Chevelle convertible. Yeah as a Corvette lover this is a MAJOR undertaking, but if one has enough $$$$$….just about anything is possible. It appears to have been stored outside and that definitely didn’t help anything.Personally I would just get it in running condition and fix the major body issues, and run it !! Here’s hoping someone has fun with it, they were great cars….

The answer is either build as a stock driver or go all out Protouring. This is the perfect car for either choice. At least that way it would be out on the road instead of sitting in a climate controlled garage waiting for a car show. GLWTS

I’ve heard of a Calloway ‘Vette but never a Cutaway ‘Vette.

My 67 427 390 glide car that I bought in 1975 for 1800.00 from Tracy Corvette in Romulus MI. No engine or trans and the chassis was already done. I put an 1970 worked over LT1 with a turbo 400. What a combo that was.

    Isn’t a 327 a 5.3, not a 5.4, or is the 5.3 a newer thing? I have a 2010 suburban with a 327 5.3.
