Dark Green V8: 1972 Pontiac Firebird

One of the lowest production years for the 2nd generation Firebird was 1972. GM autoworkers went on strike for 172 days that year and brought production of certain cars like Vegas, Camaros and Firebirds to a complete standstill. As many as 1,100 Camaros and Firebirds that were on the assembly line but not completed when the strike was declared were scrapped.  When the strike ended in September, GM shifted to 1973 production and the 1972 cars did not meet 1973 pollution or safety requirements. This car is being sold by a dealer in Dyer, Indiana. It is listed here on eBay for a Buy It Now Price of $22,500. There is also a Make Offer option.

The Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 engine is said to have been rebuilt by a Pontiac Expert. It features aftermarket valve covers, HEI ignition, aluminum manifold, 850 cfm Edelbrock carburetor and a 455 crankshaft. The power is sent to the 3:90 rear gears via a GM Turbohydramatic 400 transmission. The transmission has been upgraded with a 2,500 RPM stall converter. The odometer is said to read just under 80,000 miles.

The green exterior looks a lot like Brewster green which was offered in 1973. The seller calls the exterior Forest Green but that was not one of the three different green shades of exterior paint in 1972. Julip Green (Code 36), Springfield Green (Code 43) and Wilderness Green (Code 48) were the names attached to the different colors of green offered in 1972. The tan interior has the factory steering wheel and hand crank windows. The car is advertised as solid and well maintained. The interior is not too faded and is said to be original.

The Firebird features an aftermarket Trans Am hood scoop that is affixed to the hood. Consequently, it sits higher than on a Trans Am where it is attached to the air cleaner so it “shakes” as the engine moves. The Firebird sits on Rally II wheels and looks clean and presentable.

    Never was into Firebirds…..but of them. These earlier ones had the best Front Ends. Which was similar to a GTO front end, as far as the split grill.

      These were the best-looking of the gen2 Firebirds, from every angle. Beautiful machines! Not my favorite color, though, and the interior looks like a very amateurish re-do.

    Love the car, I’d put side pipes and the formula hood with twin hood scoops on it. Big tires, in the neighborhood of 295-45-17 and 245-60-17 and the trans am wheel flares and spoiler package.

    “A 455 crankshaft” in a 400 block?
    A 455 crank has larger main journals.
    This does not compute.

      It’s probably an aftermarket crank with small journals, or could be an original 455 crank with journal machined to 3 inches.

    Yeah, I’d hang some dice from the rear view mirror & knock it down to a low rider man!
    Come on, if it was a true Brewster green T/A like John Wayne drove in McQ I’d be all over it. Love that particular T/A as a stand out classic but this one just insults the real deal McQ. Just sayen after having many good ones but not one!

    I love the old shows from the 70,s. I love watching manix. drove a dart 340 vert. and a 70 cuda convt. and more. that show comes at 2 am that sucks. keeps me awake to late LOL.I pay attion to backround looking for random muscle cars and seeing the old stuff . Anyone else like this?
