Desert Roller: 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Chevrolet quickly expanded its product lineup in the 1960s. First the Corvair, then the Chevy II, and finally the Chevelle, all within a four-year span. The mid-size Chevelle got its first styling refresh in 1966, so the 1967 editions were cosmetically similar. This Malibu Sport Coupe is a roller, which opens up the door once again for an SS clone discussion. Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, this project (or parts car) is available here on eBay where the bidding is at $1,050 (offers accepted).

Though the Chevelle was sold as an intermediate, it was surprisingly similar in size to the Tri-Five Chevies of the prior decade. That’s because the full-size Chevrolets got just a little bigger each year thereafter. 1967 Chevelle production would total more than 400,000 units of which 166,500 were the upper-scale Malibu Sport Coupe (141,000 or 85% came with a V8 engine). The latter numbers exclude the SS 396 which had been promoted to series status that year.

The successful bidder will get a largely complete car, except for the engine and front bumper. No mention is made as to what once lived under the hood, but a 283 cubic inch V8 would be plausible as it’s 2-speed Powerglide automatic is still present. There is no discussion of rust, and the photos show a mostly clean undercarriage with solid floors and a trunk pan. But most of the sheet metal has a dent or ding in them to be worked out. The Chevy came with power steering but no factory air conditioning.

This auto has no doubt been sitting for a while as the interior, which seems intact, is really dirty. One suggestion the seller offers for the car’s future is as a pro street or drag car. Others may visualize a future SS 396 look-a-like. Separate from the sale of this roller is a real deal 1967 Chevelle SS 396 with a non-running motor from 1969 that the seller has. That’s available for $30,000. Maybe you could get both cars and make one good one from the pair?

Not entirely terrible depending on the final price. 283 fender emblems but could be made into a nice 327/350 reproduction. Lots of possibilities depending on price. New Mexico car should be reasonably rust free (need a closer look at that back glass surround area).

Can’t add much more than what’s already been said. Add a 3d pedal if you like and have fun.

I used to borrow my brother’s 1967 Beaumont Sport Deluxe 396CID
400-Turbo & 12 bolt Pozi whereby I’d drive it at 110mph after midnight
so the boys wouldn’t get me as they were most probably eating donuts at the donut shop.

At 110mph I’d have to back off because the car was starting to float. You’d
be amazed at how fast the street-light poles zip by at 110mph as one looks
    out the windows.

This car is a great deal if it goes for anything under $5k.
