Discount Driver: 1972 Oldsmobile 88

1972 Oldsmobile 88

Finding a classic car at an affordable price seems to be getting harder all the time. So, sometimes you have to consider cars that you wouldn’t normally lust after. Take this 1972 Oldsmobile 88 for example. Normally, I would have passed right over it because it’s not your typical collector car. The price and condition caught my eye though so I gave it another look. A 350 Rocket V8 resides under the hood and is claimed to run well. The paint is good and there are no obvious signs of rust. The interior isn’t perfect, but it sounds like the car can be driven and enjoyed immediately. It may not be the best looking, but this driver quality Olds does seem like a good buy. It’s located in Nampa, Idaho and is listed here on eBay for $4,200. If you have never experienced a big American car with a V8 and bench seat, then this could be your chance!

My uncle had the four-door version in olive green…I remember sleeping across the back seat as we drove to Florida to pick up a Triumph. I’m 5’10” and was comfortable. Huge, smooth car!

There is a old guy by my house that drives one as his daily driver. Very very rusty but runs good. I think he lives out of it half the time.

I would LOVE an 88 about this vintage. Probably moreso than a Toronado, although I love those too.

Last good styling year before the giant front bumpers appeared in ’73 (like they did on virtually every other marque)

The 71-76 GM B and C bodies are some of the best road cars you will ever drive. Heavily engineered, surprisingly nimble and lighter than you might expect given their massive presence. Not overly prone to rust, and bulletproof mechanicals (conv. scissor top aside). Love the roofline on the early B fuselage coupes.

And the added bonus of the 71-72 Olds calibrated TH400 transmission, likely a code OA,OK or OR. I have an 71 OR transmission in my 72 Pontiac Grand Ville, and it’s by far the best TH400 I’ve ever driven (and I’ve got 5)..the shift points and kickdowns are like they’re hardwired to your brain. Buy it for that alone!

I grew up in a 4 door version of this car. It was dark green/green. It was a big beast. I remember as a 7 year old sitting in the front seat with no seat belt cruising around town and my uncle would light up the tires at will. If this was closer I would go take a look at it. Too bad they don’t make Oldsmobile’s anymore.

Looks like the seller pulled down the option to buy it now. That’s alright though because if bidding doesn’t go much higher, it will end up selling for less than $4k.

Nice car – not seen one of these before – would certainly a unusual car to own over here in the UK. Looks a good price too !

My dad had a ’72 triple-green four-door. It was far and away the biggest POS he ever owned. It broke down frequently and he traded it three years later after it let us down during a road trip. He replaced it with a ’75 Cadillac Calais.

The perfect vehicle to drive to a Sam Raimi film festival…

I had one, also a 72, blue convertible, white top and interior, 350 2bbl. It was the Delta 88 Royale and had weird rubber over steel factory mag wheels. It was a sharp car, used to cruise with the top down on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale. I got the car in 78 I think.

If the car is as nice as it appears in the listing, then that was a deal!
