Documented Low Mile: 1986 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Ikey Heyman found another great ride. This one is in Plano, Texas which is a northern suburb of Dallas. Fortunately, this car is not a “Plain O” car but a 50k mile two owner 1986 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. This 3rd generation Trans Am is in excellent condition and looks practically brand new. The car is listed here on Craigslist for an asking price of $13,900 which seems like a good price. This one might not last long!

The engine is the original tuned port injection (TPI) 305 cubic inch V8 motor. The only modification is that a set of headers were installed in the 1980’s and still reside under the hood. The car is loaded with options including T-tops and air conditioning. The car was said to have been custom ordered and today has not been wrecked, painted and has no rust. The seller states that it has not been rained on since 2001. For those of us in Texas, we may joke that none of our cars have been rained on since 2001 because it hasn’t rained here in 20 years! The Trans Am is optioned with the WS6 suspension which includes 4 wheel disc brakes.

The carpet and interior show no sun damage. This car has not been used for trips to Home Depot! The original owner decided to pay big bucks for the top of the line Performance Radio option with sub woofer, power windows, power seats, power locks, tilt steering, cruise control, overhead console and the two tone interior. The seller discloses that the car comes with a lot of documentation including the original order form and pictures from when the car was brand new.

The Trans Am retains its 16 inch factory aluminum wheels and comes with all the spare parts and original parts that the original owner kept. With the 4 speed automatic transmission, this car should perform well around town and on the highway. These cars are not appreciating as fast as their Camaro IROC counterparts but they are getting more attention. This might be a good entry point for a well cared for 1986 Pontiac Trans Am.

’86’s were the performance turds of the TPI equipped F-bodies, but this one gets my nod on looks and cleanliness. What a beautiful car! GLWTS

Yes, for 1986 GM switched to the “Peanut Cam” for the LB9. This was the standard LG4 cam and it lowered horsepower from 215 to 190.

Third Gen T/As and IROCs with this kind of mileage usually sell for under 8k, but the color and the T-tops could bring more than average.

The fact that this perfect beauty, is an automatic, doesn’t bother me in the least. Saves wear & tear on my total left knee replacement. Definitely use it as a weekend driver, in nice weather, only.
