Don’t Donk It: Cheap Oldsmobile 4-4-2 Project

Cheap 442 Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The seller doesn’t provide much information in their ad, but they claim that this 1971 Oldsmobile is a real 4-4-2! They mention that they have the original engine and transmission. With no other details and only two photos it’s hard to know how good of a deal this really is though. This beast was built near the end of the muscle car craze so power was down a bit, but with a 455 cubic inch V8 as the base engine it was still a very respectable performer. It’s located in Fort Pierce, Florida and is listed here on craigslist for $3,500. It’s going to be a big project, but the end result should be a lot of fun. What ever you do though, please don’t donk it. Thanks for the tip Scott!

One of my all time favorites. Although I tend to prefer the Supreme body style a little more though. Used to have a ’72 and hopefully will again some day down the road. Reason I don’t now though is because almost all of them here in Atlanta are Donks!!!! I can’t wait for that trend to end…..

      What is a Donk?

A Donk is a car with huge wheels and some kind of lift kit that sits way up so the tires don’t rub. I’ve seen a lot of ruined classics that way.

        Hoos,

Just a further explanation of “Donk”… In the first Crocodile Dundee movie, Mick Dundee had a friend at a local bar that was very large and made an imposing figure to most people. The name became synonymous with large cars that were built out of proportion or a factory built land yacht. They called the friend “Donk”.

A “Donk” is actually a 1971-1976 Chevrolet Caprice or Impala that has been modified to accept large wheels and tires. These cars are referred to as Donks becaue of the Impala emblem–which is referred to as a donk, or donkey. Other vehicles that receive this treatment are called “Hi-Risers.”

I get that not everyone likes these cars, but why so much vitriol? In many instances, the cars that are customized like this are usually vehicles that no one else really wants. And before you talk about someone ruining a car, what if someone turned it into a lowrider or a G-machine? The guys who build and own these cars have just as much passion for them as anyone else who enjoys cars. The thing that makes my skin crawl is seeing these old cruisers being crushed or used for demolition derbies — THAT’S a ruined car.

        Just my .02. Rock on.

I’m not gonna swear and go on a rant but I want to, I get sick to my stomach when I see a car turned into a ridiculous Donk! Especially when I see an old Cutlass like that. You never forget your first car and mine was a 72 Cutlass Supreme.

Now I get it. You’re right. Huge wheels ruin any car they end up on, even ones I’m not that fond of in the first place.

Depends on how must rust. I would say it’s a good deal if you can get for $2500 tops.

I would be inclined to estimate it’s value if I knew something about the car. Such as power equipment, missing components, parts that mat be used during a restoration, condition of what is there, and so on. People do themselves no good posting an advertisement like this one.
They could do just as well saying “Hey, I got this. You wanta’ buy it”?

The value also depends on how molested it is. An original car, without too much mess made of things like wiring, upholstery, headliner, speaker holes, equipment removed, parts replaced poorly or modified, you know what I mean. I’ll pay a bit extra for one that hasn’t been molested.
