It’s rare to find an MGA project car that’s already running, but that’s what we have here! The current owner has had the engine rebuilt and the car runs well. However, they have an Austin-Healey project that is taking their time and money and the MGA needs to go. It’s listed for sale here on eBay where bidding is up to $3,600 but has yet to meet the reserve. Plan on shipping it from Eden, Utah if you are the high bidder.
The seller does a very good job of detailing what they see as the good and bad points of this MGA. One of the bad points is the rust, seen here in the rocker panels (sills). There are also issues with the trunk and some spots in the fenders. Fortunately, patch panels and sills are readily available for replacement purposes. However, we’re told the car runs and drives and even the brakes work, although they are described as “a bit soft.”
All the gauges seem present and it appears the plywood floors (original for an MGA) are fresh. I love how MG thought the radio was something for the passenger to deal with! They really are fun cars to drive, with the mechanical components being very similar to the later MGB model. Spares are readily available and an MGA is one of the least complex British roadsters around to restore.
The white seats are neither original nor perfect, but they will certainly do if you want to drive the car as you refurbish it. Or heck, just leave them alone and enjoy the car “as-is” (please get the brakes working better first!)
One other thing; please install a fresh air hose so that you aren’t inhaling engine fumes! I say this from personal experience, having passed out in an MG Midget from just that (coupled with an exhaust manifold leak). It did not end well, to say the least. I really hope one of you ends up with this cool British classic and enjoys driving it soon! Have you owned an MGA? Have any of the rest of you experienced going through a drive-through in the rain with side curtains? Yeah, that was fun, too!
The last MG before unibody construction.
I always thought more modern and attractive than the B. But they made the B for almost 30 years, so can’t argue with success.
More attractive, yes. More modern than a B? With wood floors, side curtains, positive ground electrical system, etc?
Modern appearance, to be more precise.
Dad had a MGA coupe when I was a kid. Gorgeous car. Unfortunately it never actually was reassembled while he owned it. I THINK his was a 58.
