Driver-Quality Long Hood: 1973 Porsche 911 T

Long-hood Porsche 911s have reached a point where truly usable, honest examples are becoming harder to find, especially ones that haven’t been over-restored or stripped of their original character. This 1973 Porsche 911T, currently listed on eBay, fits squarely into that increasingly rare category. It’s described as a driver-quality car—meant to be driven, enjoyed, and improved over time rather than hidden away or treated like fragile artwork.

Finished in red over a black interior, this 911T originally left the factory in silver and was repainted at some point in its life. The seller is upfront about the car’s positioning: this isn’t a concours build, but a solid long-hood with matching numbers and mechanical attention where it matters. Under the decklid sits the correct 2.4-liter carbureted flat-six, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. According to the listing, the engine runs well and shows strong, even compression across all six cylinders, with readings between 125 and 135 psi.

Recent work focused on drivability and safety. The fuel system has been gone through, and the braking system was refurbished with rebuilt calipers, new brake lines, and pads. Shifter bushings have also been replaced, helping the transmission feel more precise and connected. The seller notes that throttle response is excellent and that the car feels lively and mechanical, which is exactly what enthusiasts look for in an early 911.

Inside, the car continues to reflect its honest, driver-focused nature. The black vinyl seats present well and reportedly offer good support, while the carpets show wear consistent with regular use. The door pockets are no longer intact, a common issue on early 911s. All gauges are said to be clear and operational, with no fogging. A dealer-installed air conditioning system remains in place, though it is not currently blowing cold.

The car rides on 15×6 forged Fuchs wheels, fitted with tires from 2022, and the odometer shows just over 34,000 miles. As with many early 911s, mileage should be considered in context, but the seller presents the car as mechanically engaging and enjoyable in its current state.

For someone who wants a long-hood Porsche they can drive now, maintain gradually, and possibly refresh cosmetically down the road, this 1973 911T checks a lot of the right boxes. It’s not pretending to be perfect—and that may be exactly what makes it appealing.

Not a Porsche guy. So what is a long hood?

It’s a 911 that was made before the 5mph bumper cars.

My 1972 911T had the mechanical fuel injection. After January 1973 it would have the CIS fuel injection (Bosch K-Jetronic). And yes, the picture appears to display a carbureted engine instead. Could be a euro-spec / gray market car but I do spy US emissions equipment in the boot.

Too bad it’s not silver. That way I could dream of Jennifer Connelly stopping by to visit while I’m working on my P-51Mustang .
