Driveway Find: 1972 AMC Javelin SST

Super Sports Touring – in case you were wondering what the letters SST mean on this 1972 AMC Javelin. Oh yeah, American Motors Corporation – in case you were wondering what AMC stands for. Ok, enough of that. This dusty, hidden example can be found here on craigslist in the Pittsburg/Antioch, California area, just northeast of San Francisco. The seller is asking $6,000. Thanks to Rex M. for sending in this tip!

That’s a great looking rear end and I don’t usually say that in public. The AMC Javelin was made for the 1968 to 1974 model years and a lot of history happened between those dates if you think about it, wow. Everything from riots to landing on the moon to Watergate and the gas crisis. I think we may still have that beat with this crazy year of 2020.

The second-generation Javelin was made between 1970 and 1974 and the 1972 models had a new egg-crate grille as seen in the first photo and a similar design treatment on the rear of the vehicle as shown in the second photo. The seller doesn’t give us much info on this car really at all other than to say that it isn’t running and it needs some work. The body looks absolutely perfect on it as far as I can tell but with it not running, the photos were taken where it’s parked and that isn’t ideal.

The interior looks good overall but you can check out the photos and see what it needs. Upholstery is a no-brainer, especially when it’s a non-specific or intricate fabric or vinyl pattern. This car has an automatic transmission which should be a Chrysler TorqueFlite 3-speed.

Thankfully, the seller has provided a couple of engine photos so that’s always great to see. I’m not seeing power brakes (?) but power steering and AC appear to be there and things actually look good under the hood, too. This is AMC’s 304 cubic-inch V8 which had 150 horsepower and 245 ft-lb of torque. With an automatic and with this car not being in running condition, the price is well over Hagerty’s #4 fair condition value. How much would you pay for this Javelin SST?

With NO information on the status of the engine/transmission, limited photos, and looking at the interior needs, I’d offer $2.5K-3K, based on the solid appearing body. Personal pet peeve: USELESS luggage racks; I despise them, even on Corvettes, whereas their not totally useless as the T-Tops can be stored on them! This could be a good start for a project if the price is adjusted. GLWTS!! :-)

I agree as soon as I saw the luggage rack I wanted to move on!

Even at 6K this won’t last long. It looks like a great project car.

I would pay the asking price as little rust Javelins are hard to find however shipping a non runner across the country makes it a deal breaker.

For a small bumper, complete, probably rust free or nearly so Javelin with some desirable options, the price is within striking distance of a deal. Buyers have the option to pay a little more upfront to save money on the back end. Some people learn that lesson, others never do.

You are right, shipping cross country might be prohibitively expensive, however, this car is within a days drive of 10’s of millions of people. It’s also near a major port, from which more than a few local cars are shipped overseas. It should find a new home, sooner rather than later.

The Frankenstein fan shroud repair is totally worth the price of admission!

The shroud probably needed to be cut to replace the water pump. I needed to do this back in the day.

Good luck finding another one with virtually no rust.

motor and tranny are plentiful for amc. all the body bits and pieces are the nightmare. that said this looks like a good build and you end up with a unique ride to park next to the thousands of mustangs and camaros

I love painting cars but I hate body work if you know what I mean. I’d offer 4500 but pay 6k if the crank spins.

Hmmm….this car is only 20 miles from me so getting it home would be easy. I’m just wondering if this project would be worth the resulting divorce. Something to ponder….

That’ sad Rick. My wife routinely comes home and tells me about cars she sees for sale “If you’re interested in getting another car”. I can’t complain.

You couldn’t fix one rusted out rocker panel for the cost of shipping this across the country. I wouldn’t worry about the engine. If it turns, it will start. I think $4000-4500 is a good price that will make a buyer happy and should not make the seller feel like he got ripped off.
