Dual Quad 283/4-Speed: 1960 Chevrolet Corvette

UPDATE – We featured this barn find in 2019 when it was listed in Barnegat, New Jersey. The auction ended with a final bid of $30k and the reserve not met. It has just resurfaced, this time it’s listed as being in Whiting, NJ. The car is listed by the seller’s friend though, so that could easily explain the change of location. On the upside, we get more photos of the car, more information, and no reserve! It’s already bid up to $30,100, but the top bid takes it home. If you missed it before, you can find it here on eBay.

FROM 8/25/2019 – For the next owner, this 1960 Corvette represents a full restoration project. It has been parked in a barn since 1971, but it does appear to be a solid car that would respond well to the right treatment. The Corvette is located in Barnegat, New Jersey, and is listed for sale here on eBay. At the time of writing, bidding has reached $26,900, but the reserve hasn’t been met.

As you can see from this photo, the frame of the Corvette has a solid coating of surface corrosion, but it does essentially look solid. The body is showing the wear and tear of the past 59-years, but it is certainly not beyond repair. The combination of Roman Red and Ermine White is very attractive, and while 1,529 buyers chose the Roman Red for their Corvettes, only 779 of them chose to compliment it by having the cove finished in the Ermine White. As a real plus for this car, it does come with both the hardtop and the soft-top. Both are finished in white, and both look to be in quite reasonable condition.

The interior of the Corvette is looking pretty tired, and a full restoration is going to be on the cards. There are some items that look like they are in good condition, including the steering wheel and the dash in general. Pretty much every upholstered surface is going to require restoration or replacement, but items like the optional factory radio appear to have weathered well over the decades.

There is potentially some decent news when we pop the hood of the Corvette. What currently nestles there is a non-running 327, which is hooked to a 4-speed manual transmission. Now, we know that the 327 isn’t original, but we can’t be sure about the transmission. The potentially good news is that the original 283ci V8 does come with the car, and even better, it also comes with its original dual-quad carburetor setup. Of course, it isn’t clear why the engine was removed in the first place, so we probably need to temper our enthusiasm a bit. Well, we do until we know whether that 283 can be used again. I mean, you have to wonder why it was removed from the cart in the first place.

This 1960 Corvette is a car that is going to require complete restoration, but it does appear to have solid bones. There’s no doubt that it is going to require some work, but if that original 283 and dual-quad carb setup can be revived, it should be well worth the effort.

    These cars in decent shape are getting priced out of site!! This has the potential to possibly be a matching numbers car!! Get it running and driving and the price would definitely go up!! Great car though!!!

    That interior could possibly be revived with a careful application of Colorbond dye and a lot of patience. Maybe even the dashpad too. Gotta love those period correct but inappropriate spoke mag and chrome reverse wheels on this example.

    That’s not an original radio in the car, but otherwise it looks like a pretty decent project car (well depending on what the reserve is). This car’s only about 45 minutes from me and I may have to go look at it. I’m not interested in it myself, but it could be perfect for a customer of mine, who’s looking to fill in some missing years in his collection.

    Somehow I missed this one on eBay, so a big thank you to Barn Finds for posting it!

    By the way Little_Cars, no need to worry about trying to revive the interior, since the seat covers aren’t original anyway.

    Where are all these C1’s coming from lately? Seems like they go into cycles, nothing or a lot, no in-between.
    A lot of potential here, but likely will double the price once done.

    Barnegat, New Jersey is on the Jersey shore so this car has been exposed to a lot of salt air. Better buy a gallon of WD-40.

    My dream car! It does seem like a lot of these are coming out of long storage lately. Perhaps the owners are passing on and or realizing that they will never complete a restoration. With the market crashing it is a good time to sell before it happens.

    The need for speed is probably why the 283 was pulled even tho it’s a dual quad, there’s no replacement for displacement, at least that’s what I remember from back then.

      Quite true. You have to spin a small motor faster to move the same amount of air as a bigger motor. That’s from Kevin Cameron. With this car having the original motor makes the original vs. restomod decision difficult. Myself, I’d restore it because of its rarity.

    The only fiberglass bodied car I’ve ever seen with rust out behind the front wheel well. SMH Couldn’t they clean off whatever is clinging to the fender (an obvious place for rust on any other steel bodied auto).?

    I’m thinking the 327 is there because the 283 on the floor looks like one of the pistons grenaded . it looks like the cylinder wall is destroyed.

      Bone, that was my first thought. The #5 hole looks likes it suffered a catastrophic failure. Don’t know why it would still be shiny after years sitting around in the damp unless what we are seeing is the remains of an aluminum piston.
