The Chevrolet El Camino lasted through five generations, with manufacturing wrapping up at the end of the 1987 model, but not before over a million of them found homes for buyers wanting a pickup truck with a car-like feel, or vice-versa. By 1987, sales numbers were way down, with the lowest totals posted since its introduction in 1959. But that’s good news for collectors in terms of rarity, especially if you like the Super Sport models, as this 1987 Chevy El Camino for sale here on eBay is one of only 861 SS models made during the final year of production. This one’s located in Assonet, Massachusetts, about an hour south of Boston, with bidding currently sitting at $5,655.
The seller mentions this is a one-owner vehicle fresh out of storage, although we don’t get any details on how long it was put away. But we are told that the body panels are all original, along with the white paint, and that it’s never been involved in an accident. Looking around the outside, overall it appears to be in decent condition, with a couple of rust issues mentioned being the bottoms of the doors and an area on the driver’s side quarter panel, which is also missing the SS trim piece here. Maybe it’s just the camera angle, but if you’re looking at the Chevy straight from the front and rear, both bumpers seem just a bit higher on one side than the other, although it’s not really all that much. The bed has been no stranger to hauling, but at least you won’t have to worry about saying no when your friends ask you to help them move.
That’s the original 305 cubic-inch V8 under the hood, which has recently been treated to a tune-up and had all the fluids changed. Unlike the Monte Carlo Super Sport for ’87, the El Camino SS didn’t feature the higher-output V8, so buyers only got 150 horsepower. But some good news is this one’s said to be running and shifting excellently, plus the engine compartment seems clean and in very good order.
Not much is mentioned regarding the interior, but from what I can tell things inside are appearing pretty good for the most part, though it does look like there ‘s a crack near the center of the dashboard and maybe some minor wear and tear on the seats. It seems fine in there for a driver and certainly has a car-like feel, which was the whole point behind the El Camino concept right from the start. This is also a no-reserve listing, so the high bidder will be the new owner. I’m kind of liking the looks of this one and the SS trim package. Those wheels are not my favorites, but that’s an easy fix and can be done at any time down the road. What are your thoughts on this one?
It’s “nice” but as a truck it’s lacking-horsepower especially. Nowadays more than a few MOTORCYCLES have more horsepower. If sold at the price it’s at now it’d be a worthwhile project, what with rust issues, the drivers seat, dashboard, the wheels and removing the tie down brackets.
El Camino’s are cool especially’64’s, ‘69’s and well built ‘72’s but the F150 he’s selling is a LOT more interesting truck!
I personally dislike the ground effects .Reminds me of a fox mustang gt VS an lx The ground effects ruin the body style on the gt imo. Wonder what kind of rust is lurking under the ground effects.?At 5600 I’d say that’s a fair price but I wouldn’t pay any more then that.Elco are cool . Always wanted one but never got one other then a rusty 70 I flipped recently. My 81 year old Neighbor has one next door an 80 from AZ that’s been sitting well over a decade in his garage.Super clean truck with junk piled all over and in it.I might bug him about it.Hmmmm .
Love a Camino and Ranchero
I’ve always loved these. I’ve always had an Elky in the fleet since 1969. Still have two. Handiest thing to have around and with a little work handle great and can put plenty of power to the ground. If you don’t care for the 305, you can Jack up the carburetor and slide almost anything underneath it.
I may be wrong, but it doesn’t have the SS nose on it.
I believe you are thinking of the choo choo customs.
Bumpers do look to be misaligned. And while I appreciate an owner’s effort to clean up a car and present it in it’s best light, I’m always wary when the engine bay has been slathered in a gallon of Armor-all.
This is a model that GM should have just kept building forever, they would sell nicely today..
Who broke any rules here with the comments at least that I see? I see no profanity, no personal attacks or politics. What are you Mr. Hand from Fast times at Ridgemont high?
Food will be eaten on YOUR time!
As someone who special ordered a brand new 86 El Camino, and still owns it, I can tell what this car is not. It is NOT an SS. There were two different SS models in 86 and 87, the SS Sport Decor model, which had the chrome grille and bumper, with the front air dam, and the Choi Choo Customs SS with the sloped nose like a Monte Carlo SS. The SS Sport Decor had no body side chrome. And had the lower body two tone with striping at the paint line. There were no SS identifications whatsoever. This is what mine is. This particular car IS a Conquista model with the SS Sport Decor air dam and aftermarket ground effects. They have used the SS decals from the Choo Choo Customs version. Those ground effects were most likely from a company called Crystalyte. Shortly after I bought my 86, I received a catalog from them with those parts listed. I haven’t heard of them in ages, so I doubt they are still around.
get under it and check the chassis, G bodied frames rot where they kick up over the rear axle, if the body is showing some rust chances are the frame is also in bad shape, I had five Midwest G bodies all with frame rust out.
SOLD for $8,201.01.
