Estate Sale Find! 1967 Pontiac Grand Prix

The first generation Pontiac Grand Prix delivered high style. A sporty full-sized car with European flair, the Grand Prix appealed to folks who wanted a flashier, roomier upgrade to the mid-sized Tempest. Pontiac added a unique front-end treatment with hidden headlights in 1967. This specimen in East Islip, New York shows good and bad points. Bidding here on eBay has elevated the market value above $2500. Thanks to reader Miguel for spotting this Long Island GP.

The optional 8-lug wheels add interest. The 1967-only convertible would be a real find, but would change the pricing picture dramatically. The New York zip code wouldn’t normally inspire confidence in a 50-year-old car, but the listing tells a story of a fairly well-kept car (possibly from California) that suffered mostly from water ingress at the base of the rear window, a common problem with vinyl-topped classics.

Tarped as a counter-measure to the leaky rear window, this Grand Prix’s interior and engine compartment (at least) show signs of moisture trapped by non-breathing plastic. The black-and-white interior is one of my favorites, but much of the dash and trim looks heavily distressed. I have to admit I didn’t have the stomach to reach the ridiculous ALL CAPS posting, but some additional details are included.

While Pontiac’s mid-sized GTO collects more glory from this time-frame, the Grand Prix offered plenty of muscle. Heavier and fancier than the average muscle car, many such luxury cars lived their lives without being modified, a plus for anyone looking to execute a stock restoration. They’re usually well-equipped too. This one features power brakes, power steering, and air conditioning, and appears to have retained most if not all of its original under-hood parts. The base 400 cid V8 (basically a bored-out 389) made a healthy 350 HP. Perhaps it deserves better, but I could see myself driving this GP more-or-less as-is. How would you treat it?

You had me at hidden headlights, this year Grand Prix just has it all. The gill- like turn signals always fascinated me. Henry Hill drove one in Goodfellas ( good car movie). Plenty of room, a lot of motor, and good looks is a made for mafia car. The bucket seats and console round out a cool cruiser that could get up and go without saying a word. Nice car.

I love the car itself but the condition… look at it on Ebay. It’s got big rust holes through the ROOF. I’ve never seen that before. Sorry but this would require so much work to even make a decent driver of it, it’s just not worth doing IMO.

That’s an 8-track player in the console, the radio is next to the heater

And a factory 8 track tape player. And self leveling rear suspension. And smog system.

Yes I as thinking flood damage myself. you would need to see the underbelly. The dinginess of the dash makes me suspect also.

With all due respect, I think buying a very good condition version of this particular car would be a smart move, less expensive, less risk, less headaches, and again, without trying to be over critical, that car needs a lot of work, interior looks a little swampy to me, I love Pontiacs, but even doing all the work yourself, I still say your ahead paying for the nice car upfront.

These were always neat….and yes my buddy Lewis mom drove the dark blue convert to drop him off at school in abut 4th grade….it was cool because he was just a regular guy with a briefcase….think I rode in it a time or two….white interior.

The one in Goodfellas is a 68. Very nice looking car. Needs more work than a guy looking for light project may want to do but its complete and still sharp.

I seem to be the only one that likes the hardtop much more than the one year only convertible.

I had a hard top back in the ’80s and I loved it.

I can certainly see how a man who had made something of himself back in 1967 would choose this personal luxury car. Nothing on the road looked like it.

Seller on eBay says the body is in very good condition…. This car looks like it has been UNDERWATER! Even the engine and compartment is rusty. The only thing I saw of value from the eBay photos is Jesus on the console. This poor vehicle needs to be crushed and put out of its misery. I wouldn’t give a dollar for it.
