EXCLUSIVE: 1971 Plymouth GTX

Over the past few years, Mopars have really taken off! Well, if you’ve been on the hunt for a 440 equipped Plymouth, but don’t want to take on a rusty mess, this 1971 Plymouth GTX might just be the car for you! It’s had some paint touched up a number of years ago, but is otherwise original and appears to be in excellent shape. Reader Jerry O needs to find a good home for it, so if you’d love to have it, be sure to take a closer look. You can find it in Gastonia, North Carolina and you can contact Jerry via the form below.

From Jerry – Beautiful, original 1971 Plymouth GTX with 89k original miles. It has been in a garage/barn since the original owner passed away several years ago. It has received one partial repaint years ago. Has the original 440 numbers matching engine, transmission and rear end. Original Black bucket seat interior, console, and floor shift. It runs and drives excellent, needs nothing, no rust or repair ever, all original sheet metal. And I have the build sheet for it.

1971 was the final year for the GTX to be a stand-alone Plymouth model and while emission regulations were starting to take hold, the 4-barrel Super Commando 440 V8 was still rated at 370 horsepower and 480 lbs.-ft of torque. The engine bay looks to be quite clean and original, it even still retains it’s original AC system. There’s no word on whether the AC works, but it sure would be a nice feature to have during the summer months.

Between new regulations and increasing insurance costs, GTX sales plummeted down to just 2,942, making this a fairly rare Mopar. It’s nice to see one that has been well cared for and that’s ready to be enjoyed as is! It looks like you really could jump in and hit the road right now.

I assume the respray work to was repair some body damage, at least that’s what it looks like in this photo. It appears that the repair has held up well, so it shouldn’t be much of an issue. It’s definitely a nice looking car and sure would be fun to have! If you’d love to have this Plymouth parked in your garage, be sure to contact Jerry and make him an offer.

I was never a fan of this body style, but over the years it has really grown on me! It’s only taken 48 years…

The last of it’s breed guys! Some might balk at the price, but try to find another this original & complete. You probably won’t. Very desirable color/options with Magnum 500’s too. Hey–not EVERY MoPar was a Hemi ya know!

A.C.’s a deal breaker for me. Real shame, beautiful car otherwise.

Hagertys says that this car is worth 56 grand in No #3 condition.

To bad the fender tag is not decoded. It would be nice to see the build sheet too.

Very nice example. The only thing holding it back is the color.

Nice car, but too bad it doesn’t roll. It could have made for some good pictures if extraction from the garage were possible.

Sorry, but for 38 G’s, I believe there should be an effort on the seller’s part to post some good pics. I know for any buyer to make 38 G’s, they have put out a ton of effort.

Would love to see a pic of its color under the natural light of the sun.
BDW, pardon my ignorance but what was the difference between the GTX and the roadrunner of the same year? (besides the beep beep horn and decals of course)

Only if it was a 4 Speed it would be fun to drive but still a beautiful car.

All down hill after this year, or the desent had already started. Good looking car overall, love that “super commando” 440 with the big dual snorkel cleaner. The GTX was never a big seller since it first came out in ’67, not like the Road Runner anyways. Hope the new owner takes it out for some exercise occasionally.

Didn’t Catherine Bach (aka the REAL Daisy Duke) drive a yellow GTX like this before some bad guy that Bo, Luke n the General Lee “reformed” after wrecking her car? Or was that a Road Runner? Either way, I liked the car a lot better than her Jeep. Even though I’m 51 years old now, Catherine Bach will always be my first love and my wife of 32 years accepts that lol! I accept that Shawn Cassidy will always be her first love too.
