What Makes It Special? It’s a truly rust-free 914, still has original fuel injection, and is mostly original. It drives great, is comfortable, and only has had 3 previous owners before me. The person I bought it from was a PCA member, and had won a national PCA racing title in his race 914, and also an SVRA Vintage National title with the race car. He bought this one to complement it.
Since the race car was a tribute reproduction of the Ginther built SCCA race cars, the previous owner decided to paint this car in the reverse of the orange and yellow of the race car, flipping them. The car was painted with original Porsche 914 colors, just in a two-tone scheme. It still has the original interior, lenses, fuel injection, even dealer installed AC.
There is some wear on the Targa top, as well as the interior. True mileage is unknown as the odometer doesn’t record, but the speedo works. It’s been driven on a few one day tours/rallies that were about 300 miles each. It has never failed to start, always pulls clean, and barely leaks any oil if parked for a few weeks at a time.
Body Condition: Straight, rust free, as solid as the day it left the factory. The right rear tail light lens has a hairline crack, and the right front outside marker lens has a crack. Neith effects the functionality of the lights, nor do they let water in. The left front corner of the hood sits a little proud of the headlight.
The Targa top has some wear and is missing a few cosmetic plastic plugs on the inside. The PORSCHE lettering on the grill is not spaced quite correctly but is a detail I didn’t get to yet. I replaced the battery early this year when I bought the car, as the old one was at last 10 years old.
There is no rust in the hellhole below the battery, and the longitudinals look new, as does the underside of the car. The underside pics were taken on a rainy day, so what may appear to be oil is actually just water dampness. The car is missing the heat exchangers, and I never got any for the car since I live in TX and heat is the last thing I need.
Mechanical Condition: Excellent or just below excellent. Drives like new, new muffler about a year and a half ago, new bushings a few years ago, new battery in February. Original fuel injection, dealer installed AC, Pirellis that have good tread and some years left in them still, brakes are like new, car is ready to drive across the country. If it sits a few weeks in the garage it drips oil from the right side of the engine and the drips from a spot about as large as a nickel. That is the only leak on this car.
The transmission is a 5 speed with the dogleg 1st and shifts very well. I always double clutch downshift, and it shifts very smoothly for me. Upshifts are smooth unless you try to snap shift it then you will beat the synchros. Pretty normal for a 42-year-old transmission in any car, and not indicative of any issues. Prior to my ownership, this car was maintained by Jones Autowerks in San Antonio.

Special thanks to Mike J for listing this Porsche with us! These are great little sports cars and their values have been on the rise, so if you have been on the hunt for one, now is the time to buy. And if you have one that needs a new home, please consider selling it here on Barn Finds!
Price looks optimistic for a nice driver. Engine spec / number would be helpful.
Engine is stock 2 liter with original fuel injection. I’ll have to get the engine number next time I’m in the garage. As to value, it is totally rust free, never having had any need for rust repair. Also, it has all original interior and lenses. Even the air pressure powered windshield washer system.
The value is in line for highly original and rust free 914s. But, we’ll see what the market bears. One of us will be more right than the other. Hopefully it’s me. Either way, this is a solid, fun and reliable car.
So would a decent picture.
$22k? It’s in nice shape but it’s really not that original anymore. Plus the busted odometer, it could have quite a few miles under that repaint. Interesting color scheme none the less.
Thumbs up for the big bumper 914’s. I’ve got a ’75 malaga red with white interior. Great little car when you want to drive 6 inches off the ground. :)
That’s a beautiful color combo. Love the white interior.
So would a decent picture. I can’t understand the obsession with the mileage of the cars offered on BF. What’s the difference if the car has done 10,000 or 1,000,000 miles as long as it is in good, roadworthy condition as is this 914, and lots of other cars for sale on BF, is? If the price and condition suit you, and you would love to own it, then buy it.
What picture would you want? I tried to make sure every area underneath and especially the known rust areas of these cars was shown. If it’s an engine pic, without taking it out I’m not sure what better pics of that can be had. But tell me what you want and I’ll do my best to make it happen.
Spoke to previous owner. Per Jones in San Antonio, the engine is well within spec for compression etc, so they opted to not rebuild it. That was a year and maybe 2000 miles ago.
Bizarre two-tone paint!
Here is the former garagemate of this car.
These are the next best thing to a 9 11 I think that the paint is nice, people should be able to see you coming from a long way off! :-)
Always liked the 914, next to my favorite 911 or 356 a real winner.
I’m on my second 914. First was a ’75 1.8-liter. My current one is a ’76 2.0-liter with 58,000 miles. All the same options but I removed the dealer-installed AC and replaced the shorty console with a standard tall one. Hoping to have this thing listed here for sale in a couple of months. My kid wants something American to restore.
We had one in the family that I was too poor to buy when the time came. It was fun to drive and so reliable that it was boring. They had to be kept clean to keep the rust away and the interior was totally VW-like. But they were fun. My Dad’s went nearly 150K miles with no issues except for a fried clutch that his son caused by trying his hand a gymkhanas.
Jose- I do have it. I currently have it partially disassembled as I had planned to get it painted. It needs a few minor body repairs here and there and previous owner left it outside for years. It has 58K original miles, all options including leather steering wheel, console with gauges, rear window defroster, Fuchs alloy rims, fog lights, etc. Has a Burcsh “Street Quiet” tuned exhaust system, but it isn’t really “quiet”. Pros: Clean title with pink slip in hand, lots of new rubber, new Bosch blue coil and plug wires. Cons: It hasn’t been registered here in Cal since 2009. Passed smog then. I have all documents and am the third owner. I’d go $15k as it is. I’d need a few weeks to put it together. Ray
