EXCLUSIVE: 1989 Chevrolet Cameo

SOLD

In the world of collector trucks, the original Chevrolet Cameo is one of the most sought after and desirable. Well, reader Douglas P’s Cameo isn’t one of those late ’50s Chevrolets, rather the special edition S-10 that debuted in 1989 to commemorate those original trucks. While it might lack the collectability of the original, these little trucks are still cool and relatively rare. Douglas has realized he isn’t going to get around to fixing this one back up and has decided to let it go. It’s located in Bahama, North Carolina and he’s asking $2,500.

Location: Bahama, North Carolina
Mileage: Over 100k but under 150k.
Title Status: Clean

Seller’s Description: This was a special edition S-10 celebrating the original Cameo fleetside from the ’50s. There were only 5,500 of these made in 1989. Similar production numbers the next two years but the nose was changed. Very cool project truck. I’ve not seen any others since the ’90s. One owner with original window sticker and supporting documents.

Body Condition: The hood and roof has promonant surface rust but is structurally sound. Sides and underneath are sound but in need of treatment. All the add on panels are accounted for.

Mechanical Condition: The truck was running when parked behind the barn in 2012. I ran it periodically in place until the fuel pump died in 2014. The original V6 with 700R4 Trans with added Edelbrock headers and intake paired with Holly throttle body. Was FAST!

It’s hard to say whether it would be feasible to give this truck a complete restoration, but the unique Cameo trim parts could be transferred to a nicer running S-10 if it isn’t. Of course, then it wouldn’t be a genuine Cameo, but it would still be a sweet little truck. If there isn’t any major rust and you are into the weathered look, you might be able to get it running and driving for not much and you’d end up with one unique truck. So, do you think one would be worth fixing back up or is it a parts donor for a nicer shell? Let us know what you think in the comments! I’m from NC & in vase anyone was wondering it’s not pronounced like Bahamas. It’s Ba hay ma. More or less weird than a town named Lizard Lick? I am not here to judge.

Who else misread that and thought “That’s not a Camaro!”

How does something presumably so unique with a premium trim package get abandoned to the point it is scrap? GM paint didn’t weather well in these years. I guess a good vinyl cutter could reproduce those period graphics. $2500 is about all the money, and that’s only if one can get it running in place with a few simple repairs (fuel pump, jerry can, ignition goodies and fingers crossed). Sad, sad, sad.

    Never heard of this model.

Was it a factory or an after-marķet deal ?

Only worth 2500 if its running otherwise its scrap 😉

Never heard of a Cameo S10. That is some strange looking rust patterns.

1989 S10 Cameo, only 37 were produced that year.

The rust is caused by a peeling topcoat. Look at any older white GM, Ford, or Dodge van or truck and in most cases, you will see the paint peeling off. Why only white? Hard to tell, but the undercoat finish is allowing the paint to peel away which is exactly what is happening here and it is a bonding issue that has not, to my knowledge, been resolved. In the southwest it is a very common sight. You can see the effect on its’ tailgate, the door, and side of the bed. The paint peels off leaving the undercoat which on its’ own, will not stand up to the weather and then the rust ensues.
It is still a neat looking truck but it will take a complete stripping to fix.

Absolute junk, and love the “running when parked” line, surprised “I know what I have” isn’t in there. Even running and in decent cosmetic shape it wouldn’t be much of a looker.
