Exploration Of Time: 1974 Dodge Explorer Camper Van

74-explorer-van-1

This cool 1974 Dodge Explorer Camper Van conversion is more than meets the eye. In fantastic original condition, and much like a time warp, this van has some cool features. The floor is lowered in this van to make cooking at the stove less awkward. There is also a fridge, a microwave, air conditioning unit, furnace, and dining/sleeping area in this camper. Thanks Charles H for the submission! Priced $8,000 with just 84,000 miles, this looks like a great deal on a vintage camper van. Find it here on Hemmings out of Allentown Pennsylvania.

The cockpit is simple and clean, after examining the photos, this camper almost looks as if it has less than the stated 84,000 miles.

The camper area is just as nice, almost appearing as if it has never been used. The stove is clean and blemish free, and this camper has been updated with a micro fridge and microwave combination. A very unique feature of this camper is the low floor in the belly section of the camper in front of the stove. This is a very well thought out option making cooking much more enjoyable versus being hunched over.

The wood paneling in this camper is very nice as well. Overall this camper is very nice, and to top it off, this camper even has a gas furnace. This camper has clearly been well maintained over its lifespan and is a very nice example of a vintage camper that is ready to roll on your next adventure.

Who is ready to take this Dodge on their next road trip, or long term adventure? We know that we are ready to pack our bags and explore all of the tacky neon signed towns we can find. Where would you go and what would you do with this fantastic Dodge Camper?

I love camper vans. Not too big, yet big enough to pull a boat to the lake. And still take care of all your basic camping needs. This is a great find.

Very nice that someone kept it this clean and maintained. The price doesn’t seem out of line for it’s condition. If I was interested I would have to check the brakes as my 74 Dodge van had a issue with the brakes locking up on long drives which the dealer never figured it out so he took it back.

I’m actually seeking something like this as a weekend getaway machine, but as I look at a lot of these vintage campers, I wonder how livable the designs actually are. The side-to-side bed probably won’t hold a 6-footer comfortably—especially a couple—and that dropped floor seriously impinges on ground clearance. You will be dragging it over speed bumps (campgrounds have them) as well as during any off-road travel. Good luck in Baja.

You could take this thing to Sportsmobile and have a nice pop-top added for another $8k….or you could get an early 90’s Dodge van (which is pretty much the same as a ’74) already equipped with the penthouse roof and camping gear for about 8k.

The flipper probably got a nice price on this baby, but at his ask you can get something older and funkier like an A108 camper, a much sexier 70’s custom boogie van, or a way more usable 90’s van.

This one is fun to look at, but I don’t want it.

Vantastic! Somebody cue up 1970s one hit wonder Sammy Johns.
Seriously, this is good value, even with previous concerns mentioned. Head to Yellowstone and the terrific Tetons!

I have an 85 xplorer, based on a b350, it has the same dropped floor, no issues with it dragging. The trailer hitch on the other hand has touched down a couple of times during my 12+ years of ownership.

The bed is fine for me when I am alone, sleeping diagnal, a bit cozy when the gf joins, but still doable. I am 5’11”

I think about going bigger until I drive it to the lake front where a class c won’t be able to get through the trees.

This one should not have the trailer hitch issue. The one I habe has the extended rear that has out about another 3 feet from the axel, maybe 4.

I was the first owner and I took great care of it. I would like to re-purchase it, if it is still available.
