Fastback Survivor: 1966 Ford Mustang

The first generation of the Ford Mustang came in three body styles: a coupe, a convertible, and a fastback. The latter may be the most desirable today because of lower production numbers than the coupe and its even sportier good looks. The seller has a mostly original 1966 fastback that has held up well after almost 60 years. That may be why the seller is asking the top dollar ($49,000) here on craigslist. A “black plate” California car, this genuine pony currently calls Fallbrook, CA, home (and is a tip from Henry Nichols).

Ford built nearly 36,000 fastbacks in 1966, but fewer than 8,000 came with the luxurious “pony interior”. That’s less than both the coupe and convertibles were so equipped. The seller FB appears to be finished in Nightmist Blue, which is so dark it almost looks black in the photos. We’re told all or most of it is from the factory, but we don’t know how the seller is sure of this, since no mention is made of his/her length of ownership.

The Pony interior appears to be original, too, and the amount of wear on the driver’s bucket seat supports the reported mileage of 100,000. This machine isn’t a garage queen, but a car that has been used yet is also well-maintained. The body is straight, and rust may never have been an issue. Under the hood resides a C-code 289 cubic-inch V8 (200 hp = 2-barrel carburetor) and an automatic transmission, which we assume are numbers-matching.

Some recent work has been done, but not things that should diminish the survivor’s claim. These items include replacing the tires, brakes, carburetor, battery, fuel pump, and water pump. Built in California (San Jose) and sold new in Beverly Hills, this Ford may have been domiciled on the Left Coast all its life. This is well and good, but is an original ’66 Mustang worth nearly 50 grand?

    It’s what the market will bear again.
    I am am a Mustang’s guy and have a 68 California Special and prior 67 vert etc etc
    To state original some documentation is warranted and a deluxe Marti report please.
    No underneath pictures provided could help claim a higher value car.

    I like the fast back but for asking personally would parlay the 50 plus some more on a 69 or 70 BB Fastback .

    From the top, this looks like one worth investigating in person, if the price isn’t off-putting. Would like to see what it looks like underneath, and see what kind of paperwork is there.

    If it is indeed a driver… I hate to say it but it seems too pricey and Mustangs are really cool and stuff but that is a Falcon with a Mustang body. I would love this beauty but if I was gonna drive a mustang around, maybe add a brand NEW one to my car collection. New ones are even MORE desirable imo.

    Its nice to see a mostly original fastback. I would rather have a 3/4 speed…..slushboxes take some of the fun out of owning it for me. Leaving aside the price as this is aimed at another audience, I love the serious looking black walls combined with the color. Its all business even with the two tone Pony interior. A very nice Mustang.
