Fisher T-Top Project: 1977 Pontiac Trans Am

A lot of Trans Ams are cloned to look like Y84 Special Edition Trans Ams these days but most people forget that your could buy a Code 19 black Trans Am without the SE package. My brother had a 1978 Code 19 Trans Am in high school that was later stolen when he went to college. The car was beautiful and no one made a fuss that it wasn’t a Special Edition. Here is a project car that looks pretty solid. It is a 1977 Code 19 black Trans Am located in Lincoln, Nebraska. It is being sold by Restore a Muscle Car and is listed here on eBay. There are 12 days left in the auction but with a Buy In Now Price of $11,900, it might not last that long.

The interior of the car is gutted and there are lots of original parts that go with the sale but they are used parts which many will need to be replaced. Based on the console, the car was originally an automatic car and the dash bezel indicates it had air conditioning. An interesting is addition to this car is that a prior owner cut in Fisher T-Tops which weren’t available until later in 1978. In 1977, Pontiac offered Hurst T-tops which were smaller in size than the later Fisher T-tops offered from 1978-1981.

The Trans Am does not have a drive train so the new owner can decide what they want. For 1977, Trans Am buyer had three engine options. The base engine was an L78 400 cubic inch engine V8 engine and was rated at 180 horsepower. The base engine in California was the L80 403 cubic inch V8 Oldsmobile engine that delivered 185 horsepower. The performance option for 1977 was the W72 400 cubic inch V8 engine. It was factory rated at 200 horsepower. The W72 engine was special and was equipped with a 800 cfm 4 barrel Rochester carburetor, high capacity 60 psi oil pump, special cam, baffled oil pan, special piston rings and 6X heads with 8:1 compression.

This car also has 1978-1981 15×8 snowflake aluminum wheels that were part of the WS6 Performance suspension handling package. In 1977, snowflake wheels were optional but were only available in 15×7 size and did not have the lip around them. The paint on this Trans Am looks good but is said to have some scratches after being stored for a long time.

It is the perfect candidate for a restomod
browse on line and order aftermarket performance parts and build one to your liking
This one has a great solid foundation to build on

Transplanted roof from late 78-81 would turn most serious collector types away. Great restomod candidate now..

Looks like it should come in a huge cardboard box with an instruction booklet.
Just need to run out to the hobby shop and pick up a tube of Testor’s.

Iron Duke. Add a nice 5 speed and you would have an unusual car that would draw attention at shows. Or maybe, go old school with an OHC six from the sixties. The 2bbl was a good option for those. That would make a nice driving car. Or a straight Chevy six would also fit.
