Flareside Rat Rod: 1963 Ford F100

Step-side trucks aren’t everyone’s taste. However, for those people looking for an ultra-short wheelbase, they can be a great option. For this generation of F100, the short wheelbase step-side (Flareside as Ford calls it) was produced at about 1/5th the rate of the Styleside, making them fairly rare. This one is a 1963 Ford F100 and it can be found here on eBay with a current bid of $5,900 and the reserve hasn’t been met yet. Located in DeLand, Florida, it has the rat rod look, but could also be considered un-restored. Quite a bit has been done under the hood to keep it on the road. Have a look.

The interior is pretty plain. You can see a late-model tape deck in the dash, but other than that, it seems un-modified. There is a new gas tank behind the re-covered bench seat. The cockpit looks like a comfortable place to reside!

The straight-six is the original 223 cubic inch powerplant. It has been upgraded with a new carburetor but the original carb will go with it when it is sold. The typical maintenance items have been addressed including new spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, coil, aluminum radiator, valve cover gaskets, starter, fuel pump, battery, hoses, thermostat, and water pump.

Overall, this is a good starting point for a project or cruiser. It could be restored, modified, or driven as-is. If it was yours, would you change anything? What would be the first change you make?

This is cetainly an ugly little duckling ,but it grows on you, the more you look at it. At least it is a 1/2 ton short box. The price is the key, if the reserve is much higher than the last bid, you will be upside down tn this truck, in a heart beat. I have a builder friend, who specilizes in putting this era trucks, on late model Ford chassis. Its not in-expensive ,but I think this truck, would be an excellent canidate for that

If it wasn’t a thousand miles away? I’d bid on this. First thing to go would be the 6 banger.

Only 48 miles from where I live, but I’m already Florida insurance poor with 3 vehicles for 2 of us, but like the other guys, those white walls have to go. Then a cherry apple red paint job. IF that 6 is still running strong, I’d keep it. Would probably only use it as a daily driver or cruiser at OLD Town in Kissimmee.

Cherry apple? Pick a one flavor lol. But really I agree with you, I’d leave it largely unchanged. Tires are easy, paint not so much.
