Flat Floor Roadster: 1962 Jaguar E-Type

Series 1 Jaguar E-Types are among the most desirable classic cars you can buy, and this example in Canada gets an additional boost in value due to having a flat floor. This car was purchased used from a dealer by the seller in 1981, and used as a summer drive until an overseas assignment rendered it stationary since 1990. It is sold now as needing complete restoration with numerous spare and new parts included. Find it here on eBay with bidding over $46K and the reserve unmet.

The flat floors are associated with the earliest production Series 1 cars, a design that was later changed to allow for more headroom for taller drivers. I had thought these early Series 1s also had external hood latches but they’re not visible here; the seller notes that it does have welded-in hood louvers and that it was likely replaced in Canada. Paint is said to be original.

The Jaguar features a black interior with the preferred manual transmission. If you’re on the hunt for a convertible E-Type, this is hard to beat. The covered headlights, flat floor, manual ‘box and high levels of originality all combine to make this a very compelling restoration project. The odometer currently reads 69,815, which the seller should be able to confirm as accurate.

Numerous spare parts are included, which the seller details in full in the listing. The only major deviation from completely stock condition is a sensible one, with the seller noting that the transmission was upgraded to an all-synchro unit from a 1965 E-Type. With flat-floor roadsters and coupes seemingly always in demand, this one deserves to sell for a strong number.

What’s with the spare instrument cluster?

Looks like one out of a sedan from the wood trim on it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets close to a 100K.
The tool kit is wrong for this car. that kit is from a sedan or saloon as the Brits say.
It has the correct ash tray and intake manifold for a flat floor car.

Something not right here as there are no outside hood latches shown and the locking catches are shown left and right inside the car so it can’t be an early 1961 E Type in my book. I stand to be corrected.

flatfloor E chassis #875771 had the underbonnet catches for the outside latches (on the firewall) but no parts on the original bonnet. It had all the cockpit bonnet latch parts that later cars had.I did the mech. resto on this car. It was a matter of when parts became available as many small parts on 875771 were handmade initially.Research showed this to be correct for this car.

As stated the auto is a 1962. OBL, Welded Louvres, Flat Floors, early 1961 only. I should know, I owned # 875323 many years ago…

I also owned #875323. When I bought it, it had been converted to the inside hood latches and they kept vibrating open.

Not all flat floors were outside bonnet latch cars.

    $130,000 to restore it properly!

Show your math! Respectfully I think that number is inflated. This could be restored for less than 6 figures unless all the next owner wants to merely write checks.

    I’ve a ‘62 OTS Series 1 for many years.
Just like the ‘62 above, it also has flat floors and welded hood louvers, as well as the peculiar barrel seats.
In my experience, only the ‘61s had those two features AND outside bonnet latches.

46K and needs a complete restoration? No wonder this poor boy never tried to buy one.

    Why a complete restoration?

Clean it and make it mechanically tip top and drive it like this.

Sold at 55 what a buy I’d say. Only XKE I ever saw in person was rotting into the ground very near the Chesapeake bay. Has always been my favorite.

Hey Dennis, we are alot alike. We both need closure! I am glad to see your ended listing prices also. Always give you a thumbs up. We have both been here long enough to see some of these rigs come back around. Nice to know the backstory. Did that nice ragtop of yours sell? Having a Leinies Creamy Dark for you now! Take care, Mike.

Hi Mike, Still have the Beetle. I have it on Craig’s List and Facebook Marketplace. I’ve had a few interested people asking questions, but they want to know if I’ll lower the price without looking at it. I tell them that it’s possible, but first step is to look at it.
I’m not in a super huge rush to sell it, so we’ll see what the next couple of weeks brings.
The only Leinies around here is Summer Shandy, not my favorite.

I had a later production ’61 roadster back in ’68 and it had inside hood latches. Wish I had kept it!
