Flatbed German: 1966 VW Pickup Find

vw1

This small cab VW pickup is a configuration that you don’t see very often. Although it’s a little rusty and has a few components missing, you can see that this is a very workable project. It’s located in East Lansing, Michigan and is up for sale here on eBay where the buy-it-now is $3,500 but lower bids are being entertained. Personally, I go for the big pickups that I can tow things with, but I can see the attractiveness in these unique vehicles with Beetle-ish reliability. Would you fix it to drive as-is or restore it?

IDK, looks pretty rough. These are extremely rare and for what it would cost to fix this one, you could probably go to Europe, and find a nice one WITH shipping, and still be ahead. On an overseas trip many years ago, we landed at an airport, I think it Zurich, and there were a bunch of these running around doing airport duties. Sorry, it is cool, but I’d have to pass. Mike Wolf of American Pickers (one of my favorite shows, who I found out, is making a visit to a junkyard in N. Wis. this month, not far from me) has a ’62 VW like this as his daily driver, ( beside the AP van, of course)

These are few and far between in Europe. They come here now to buy them for restoration back home.

I had the double cab version back in the late ’60’s, given to me by a bloke in the pub! Just needed a new tyre (£11 I seem to remember). Great fun, rubbish on hills though. Very utilitarian interior. I never seen another spilt screen double cab since, and can only recall seeing one other single cab variant recently here in the UK. We do see a few T3 pick-up’s still though.

It’s rusty and needs work, but at that price it’s not a bad buy. Everything can be replaced with quality aftermarket parts, sheetmetal, interior and electrical. Entry price to pre-’67 type 2s is getting higher and higher. Good opportunity for someone.

    Sold already.

People are restoring these from much less than you see here. Klassicfab.com make high quality repros of most of the sheet metal you’d need to rebuild it.

I’ll say again that I just never understood the VW bus as a collector car. Woefully underpowered, with frightful handling, and no sex-appeal at all. It’s the recumbent bicycle of the vintage car world.

So who is wrong, all the thousands and thousands of fans spending big money or… you?
