The Flying Spur: 1995 Rolls-Royce Estate

I love hunting for oddball and unique cars. I was recently surfing the internet and spotted a dealer with some pretty interesting cars. That’s when I spotted this wagon! You really can’t get much more unique or odd than a turbocharged Rolls-Royce wagon! In 1994 Rolls-Royce introduced a special high-performance edition of the Silver Spur. They took the standard 6.75 liter V8 and strapped a turbo system to it, improved the suspension and added some new safety equipment. And to make things more interesting, a previous owner paid to have it converted into the Estate Wagon that we see here today. You can take a closer look at this luxurious high-performance grocery hauler at the Desmond J. Smail Dealership in Olney, Buckinghamshire.

The work of converting this Spur into a wagon was handled by West Coast Customs and the seller is keen to point out that the work was done using aluminum and at the highest standard possible, to ensure that it looked factory. I have to admit, it really does look like something Rolls would have actually built.

With just 25k miles on the odometer, this car is still like new on the inside and it sure is luxurious. Now if only the steering wheel were on the proper side! Actually, being right-hand drive just makes it that much more interesting. I would love to sit down in the beautifully trimmed leather seats and slam the gas pedal to the floor. Rolls never officially stated how much power these had, but estimates range from 360 up to 400 bhp with over 500 foot pounds of torque. Considering it can launch all that leather and wood grain to 60 in just 7 seconds, I believe it!

I know this isn’t our typical kind of find, but I just couldn’t resist! While I would hate to have to work on it, this is one British luxury car I would love to have. Between the killer looks and quick acceleration, it would be one heck of a conversation piece and a surprisingly fun daily driver. I just sure if it’s really worth $125,000! What do you think?

The wagon portion has very odd proportions and not in an attractive way. The interior of the rear is also not greatly useable.

As someone who used to restore & repair Rolls-Royces, I can tell you the bulkhead behind the rear seat is not something that can be removed, it’s a major structural part of the car.

But more important, the reason the immediate area behind the seat is so deep [front to rear deep], is because that is where the fuel tank is located, and unless they wanted to eliminate the spare tire, there is no other place to put it. Plus in that area are the rear suspension hydraulic systems.

No doubt about it, this was created not to be used as an Estate or Wagon, it was for looks. And the looks are OK from the roof line to the rear hatch, but the side windows look like they were added later. The side windows should have been another 6 to 8 inches longer, and no Rolls-Royce factory approved coachbuilder would ever have left the rear side window rubber channels exposed.

I remember seeing a Silver Shadow that had been built in 1985 as a 2 door sedan delivery, no side windows, It was used by the Champagne winery Krug in London. I’m including a photo of it.

      Greetings All,

      I agree with Whippeteer!

The rear windows are look atrocious. Out of proportion, along with their execution doesn’t match the rest of the car with the amount of reveal on the rubber extrusion.

Like it, just have seen others done better.

This, definitely, is a car for the ‘man who has everything’.

I’d rather have a nice Vista Cruiser.

Bill, at first I laughed at what you wrote but then, after thinking about it, I have to agree 100%. If this car didn’t have the RR radiator the seller would be hard pressed to get 10-15K I suspect. The Vista Cruiser had tons (literally) of style and who doesn’t remember riding in one when they were new? Of course the “My Other Car is a Vista Cruiser” bumper sticker would be most appropriate for the rear of this Roller Without a Father creation.

The rear side windows do not look right

Don, you are so right. They windows look diabolical and Rolls Royce would never have let such a monstrosity leave the drawing board let alone put it into production. I find it hard to believe that West Coast Customs had anything to do with this conversion either.

Since you could probably get a really nice sedan example for under 25K I’d say the price was ambitious.

Back canopy doesn’t match the window shape, size, and treatment of the doors.
Other than that, needs some surfboards on the roof.

For sale from an Aston Martin restorer. Not sure what happened there, but way overpriced for a hacked Royce.

Torque has units of force times distance, so given the numbers I assume you mean foot-pounds of torque, not just pounds :)

Sorry, I just assumed that was understood given the subject matter.

It’s been fixed. I wasn’t trying to make excuses, simply stating that I assumed it was understood given the context.

M.E. needs to lighten up on the caffeine. There’s a way to be instructive and the 2 comments aren’t even close.

I like station wagons, not SUVs, and one of my cars is a genuine wagon, from a ways back I think you would have to say. But this one might just be the ultimate station wagon, what with the size and torque.

That’s all good, but what could be the biggest hoot would be pulling up to the front of the local Costco and loading groceries in the back. Or, maybe having the hired driver do it, complete with dress suit and cap, with M’lady sitting in air conditioned comfort in back.

OK, back to reality and my old Volvo XC. Got to make a run to Costco…myself.

The Flying Spur is VERY VERY VERY rare, maybe 25 maybe world wide. West Coast Customs, as in the hack and bondo, lowrider shop in Corona, Ca. ??? God I hope not, those guys SUCK, their work is piss-poor on a good day. They couldn’t even take in a job I offered them years ago. They’re more interested in tinting windows, bolting on 24″ wheels and installing stereos than actual work on cars.

Call me crazy, If PCH comes through this week, I’ll haggle with him. A few touches like stainless around the rear windows, possible enlarging them and viola. Just the thing to tow my vintage Chris Craft.
