Free 1977 GMC City Bus!

Free 1977 GMC City Bus

This City Bus might not be as cool as a Scenicruiser, like the one that our buddies Dave and Wayne made the bus trip of a lifetime in, but of course that one wasn’t free like this one! That’s right, this big GMC is being given away! It looks rough and the seller doesn’t offer any photos of the inside, but the 671 Detroit Diesel is still in it. The owner is selling their house and needs it gone quick, so if you are in the Vermont area and have always dreamed of making an epic journey in an old bus, you better hurry over and pick this one up. You can find it here on craigslist in Washington, Vermont. Special thanks to Paul B for this awesome tip!

1977 GMC City Bus

Restoring one of these buses is a monumental task to undertake, but the finished product is worth the work. Just think of all the history and stories that this bus could tell. I hope someone restores it, but it might just be a parts donor at this point. You will have to take a closer look in person to know for sure. So what do you think, is this one worth saving or is it a parts bus? Maybe you’d like to make an epic journey like Dave and Wayne did?

    I’d say fool hardy.
How much would it cost to replace the front glass?
    Get the engine running?
    Repair the rust?
City busses are not geared for the interstate.

    A romantic fantasy maybe.
    Scrap metal definitely.
If you want a deal on an RV check Copart.
If you want an old bus find one running at least.
Think hard before you pull the chevelle out of the garage and try the same tools and skills on a rear engine bus.
How many staycations does it take to restore a bus?

        Not me
        I had my head examined.

        Completely empty,
        Just like my bank account

This is a Suburban model (note the luggage doors) and would have gearing for higher speeds. Definitely a major, major project, though…

I’d agree with Van, the cheapest Bus will be the one in the best condition.

I had friend that had an old bus on their property and wanted it gone for free. It had been sitting for 20+ yrs. At night my friend would get his night vision goggles out and shoot the rats running out of the bus with his 22 riffle. He ran an ad for a free bus and two old diesel mechanics came by at 7 am and by 10:30 am had the engine running. Drove away by 4 pm. Diesel engines were real basic back in the day.

I took an ice example of this bus on trade towards a semi I was selling. Sold it to an old buddy Jim Darr out in Cramer Junction California. He had been at a government sale and bought a couple of dozen of these for less than 100.00 each…….that was 20 years ago, he still has most of them sitting in the desert. The engines are 6V71’s, not a popular or useful engine like a 6-71. Just nothing here but scrap by the ton.

Classic example of how to make a little money starting with a lot………it needs to be sold by the ton.

Too far gone to be worth restoring, but might make good bones for a tiny-house type structure, if you are trying to do off-the-grid living on the cheap. Moving this thing wont be cheap though….

I wonder how much downforce that rear attachment provided?

Tow it back deep into your property, out of touch with society for a ‘party house !!!

There is one of my buses in Calgary Alberta where I live. it sat in the same spot for over twe decades and was used daily as a fast food burger bus. They moved it about 3 years ago to a better location and it is still going strong. By the way the burgers are pretty good and come with a large serving of French fries. ( chips for you US folks ).

Thinking about dragging it out to Oregon and renting it on Airbnb for $100 a night. I bought coffee out of a English double decker last week, so I’m sure someone who thinks outside of the box can use it.

    It’s a 1963-65, not 1977.
