From the Crypt: 1952 MG TD

1952-mg-td-project

Instead of parking a hearse in your front yard for Halloween, may we suggest this MG? The best part of our plan is that after the trick or treaters have left, you can drag it into the garage and start your winter project. It looks like it just came from the crypt, but at $2,800, it seems like a good starting point to us. Find it here on craigslist in Glen Arm, Maryland. Thanks goes to Graham B. for the tip!

The only things we are afraid of here are rust and rot. Severe corrosion can turn any fun project into a nightmare. This one could get even scarier because there’s lots of wood underneath that sheet-metal. The wood floors are easy to replace, but the framework under the bodywork can be frightening. It is hard to assess the situation from photos because the car appears to have just been dug out of a graveyard.

We got excited when we first saw this listing because we thought it might be a MKII competition model. We don’t see the dual fuel pumps or the bonnet bump so that doesn’t appear to be the case here. Still, any TD is fun to drive on a backroad with the top down. Just make sure the brakes are in good working order or things can get a little spooky.

It is not the most terrifying project car we have ever seen, but don’t go into it thinking it will be cheap or easy to bring back to life. Pick up a copy of the workshop manual and a restoration guide before settling in for a very long winter. Just make sure you get it done before you look like these guys!

when i look at the picture of the front of car it looks like it hit something and i can not tell if the front wheels are turned the same or not. but that is what a PI is for. i thing i see more then the asking price in parts. but if you buy your only risking a small amount of money not like the $70000+ for the 356. no title could be a issue. great find
