Fun For Four! 1986 Ferrari 412 Five-Speed

Good parents teach their children the value of sharing. After all, what fun is owning an exotic Ferrari if you can only share it with one other person? Well, probably amazing, but what if you could share it with two friends, or family members like your kids, or another couple? That’s better, right? Ferrari had these unselfish owners in mind when crafting the four-passenger 412! This highly original 1986 Ferrari 412 in San Jose, California needs nothing other than a title transfer to the high bidder here on eBay. At least 15 selfless bidders have raised the bar above $37,000 for the privilege of owning this west-coast beauty in luscious Rosso Corsa (Red).

The supple tan leather combines with the deep red to complete one of Ferrari’s most iconic color combinations. Three-speed automatic transmissions served many Ferrari four-seaters of the 1980s, and this 412’s five-speed manual gearbox makes it one of 270 produced in ’86 according to the owner. Believe it or not, the automatic was General Motors’ sturdy TurboHydramatic 400, just like your plumber’s work van. Nothing against GM, but I’ll take the five-speed!

Anyone claiming this 412 is not a “real” Ferrari should soak up an eyeful of this engine bay! The 4.9L (302 cid) V12 made 335 HP during a year when the Chevrolet Corvette made 230. Thanks to wikipedia.org for some details. Bosch ABS controls the four-wheel discs when necessary. After covering a mere 30,220 miles, the engine should perform as expected. By the seller’s description, only the spark plug wires deviate from stock.

My apologies; there was a car in this picture but now I can’t see it! All joking aside, the 412’s back side is quite lovely, including the classic tail-lights. The original paint gleams, and the seller graciously admits to some fade in the vibrant red. For years, finding the advanced but ill-fated TRX tires proved highly challenging. Problem solved today though, thanks to the reproduction market. Anyone who buys an exotic Italian 2+2 won’t mind paying $400 each for tires.

While many vehicles from this time-frame offered all-rectangular buttons, the Ferrari utilizes a mixture, with old-fashioned circles adding a vintage touch. The Nakamichi tape deck, a $3,000 add-on, awaits your bidding. What cassette would you favor to properly enjoy this nearly-immaculate ’80s Ferrari?

Nice! I remember when these were the price of a loaf of bread and nobody wanted them. It was a big mistake to not get one a decade or so ago. The same with the Mondial. This 412 has a long way to go, Hagerty is at $56,000 for a #3 good condition car with a 5-speed, ouch. $400 per tire, that’s cheap!

Hi Scotty – I remember watching these when they were about the price of a new 4 cyl Camry. Now you can buy that era of Camry for about $800, and these have tripled. You definitely don’t see many five-speeds though – that’s got to boost the value. I’ve heard it takes big money to keep a Ferrari on the road, but I’ll probably never find out!

I must have a Ferris Bueller’s Day Off soundtrack around here somewhere……lol. All joking aside, I would love to park this in my garage.

Hi Francisco – Excellent choice, one of my favorites! It’s hard to beat Frank and the Billy May Orchestra tearing it up at high volume. You have good taste, my friend.

Sorry to say, even though it’s not the correct car, but the time line fits, I’d be rocking a tape by Jan Hammer of the Miami Vice soundtrack, probably sporting a white jacket with a pink shirt!

What a pretty car, but the service parts alone put it way out of my league.

    Nice piece.
“Fun For Four!” Hmm. Clearly your definition of fun tens to the masochistic as those rear seats are on the tight side.
