We’ve all been there: a small project spirals into a big one, and suddenly, we’re surrounded by boxes of old and new parts and our car is no where near complete. That appears to be the case with this 1987 Ford Mustang GT convertible, which is offered up here on eBay as a garage find project that has apparently gone off the rails. However, it looks like it comes with loads of good parts, and the potential to finish a deserving project at a bit of a discount with an opening bid of $5,000 and no reserve.
If you’ve ever gone ass-over-teakettle into a restoration, you realize very quickly how easy it is to both spend money and disassemble car and how much harder it is to pay bills and put said car back together. The seller of this Mustang notes that it is a genuine 117,000 mile car that was pulled off the road for one small project as a runner and subsequently spiraled into a total restoration. However, it still had some issues which paint a slightly different picture as to what you’re starting with if you drag this project home.
First, the 5.0 engine had a cracked block, so the seller sourced a replacement. After snagging a 5.0 from an ’86, he proceeded to build the engine as follows: It was bored 030 over with new forged aluminum pistons, OE rods, polished standard crank, GT-40P heads with Crane valves springs installed (set up for FRP E-303 camshaft), new cam bearings, GT-40 intake, ceramic-coated BBK headers, ARP fasteners throughout, and a 1.6 Crane roller rocker set. The engine is not set up to run yet, but has been assembled.
The stock red interior is included, along with a white leather upholstery kit. The seller notes he had plans to build “…a 69-70 Shelby Tribute car in Calypso Coral with traditional white/black muscle car interior.” Before you do that, however, you’ll need to fix the shock tower rust, another common Fox body ailment and a project that must be done before re-assembly can begin. The seller notes the driver’s side floor pan has been replaced, so rust was clearly an issue. Is this project Fox body worth the seller’s opening bid?

Oh my down the worm hole this guy went. Not to say the end product wouldn’t be a nice car just got caught up in a car that needed more than they bargained for. Best to start with a cleaner base for a project of this size. Maybe 5 lug conversion and bigger brakes should have been added with the higher engine output.
Offer him a grand for the motor and avoid that project.
Well if you need parts this might be a option but otherwise its a can of worms that will probably have you buying parts that the seller claims are in the box
I wouldn’t buy this site unseen. I’d go to where it is located and look over exactly what is included in the sale of the car as well as the over all condition of the car and then decide if I want to take on this project.

Fox Body Mustangs are my favorite. And this would be a good project. While I agree that taking over someone else’s unfinished project isn’t the best scenario to start with. But if you be patient and take your time it can turn into something special.
