One of the best GT cars of the 1980s was the Porsche 928. Now, best is a relative term and has nothing to do with reliability, but rather how the car behaves when found in peak form. That being said, there’s still enough demand for good ones that decent projects command respectable money, so it’s not surprising to see this garage find 928 S4 bid up to over $13,000. And what’s that parked next to it in the same forgotten garage? Find the 928 here on eBay with no reserve.
Out in the open, the 928 looks downright presentable despite having sat idle since 2015. The seller notes that it is a one-family owned example and that it’s been living in Jacksonville, Florida. While it has been parked, the longtime owners apparently took good care of it while on the road as it didn’t need much coaxing to fire up again. The standard S4 wheels have been replaced with alloys that resemble the ones found on the later 993-chassis 911, a common OEM upgrade.
The interior is in great shape, aside from the carpeted floor mats beginning to lose their color over time. The bucket seats and the leather upholstery are in excellent condition and lend credence to the low mileage claims. The dashboard doesn’t appear to be cracked and the OEM steering wheel remains in place. Overall, it’s hard to fault the 928 inside, although I do see what looks like some material separation on the driver’s side door panel.
After going through the vehicle and changing the fluids, the seller claims the 928 fired up and ran well. The 928 is not a car that takes kindly to sitting, so buying one as a project is often a risky proposition. Fortunately, this 928 was clearly loved before being parked, so it’s an encouraging sign that this peak 1980s GT car came back to life without too many headaches. Now, it needs a bit of finishing to make it even better, but you could certainly use it as-is.
Correction on the interior…drivers seat will need some attention to bring it to the level of the rest of the car.
I think it’s the driver side rear seat that needs some attention.
Didn’t the entire instrument cluster tilt with the steering column?
Yes the instrument cluster is part of the Steering wheel and goes up and down and what looks like an open seam on the drivers door panel is the courtesy light for the interior and it also lights the door. At the rear of the door is a red warning light as well. Very nice and advanced for the 1980’s and late 70’s of almost 50 years ago. As for the seats the switches are the biggest problem and the seats will go up and down as well as front and back and the back tilt. I have driven these cross country a few times from California to Kansas City and it was one of the most comfortable cars I have ever driven for a distance. Oh I have a 1984 manual one in my garage.
Anytime I see a 928 – I hear “Who’s the U-boat commander? ” in my head.
Looks like shill bidding it up… too bad, I was considering it.
Running and driving a 88 928 barn find without first replacing the timing belt and associated components! I don’t have the guts to do something like that. Low miles helps but the automatic doesn’t. Looks like 5-10K for deferred maintenance to make this car a good driver.
Looks great, my Porsche mechanics hated em, ridiculously heavy suspension components that needed custom massaging due to the 4400+lbs curb weight.
Despite a slight power boost on S4 engine still under powered & far to heavy.
My neighbor purchased one & left front suspension failed on a busy through-fair, the wounded 928 on the roadside absolutely worst negative advertisement EVER!
That was in the States, Here in Bavaria Germany these are Far & Few on the road, having been abandoned by the Germans themselves as simply to costly to maintain & having scary suspension issues.
Porsche screwed the pooch on this model.
Best engineering aspect was the perforated Crystalline Chromium cylinder walls.
Btw in Porsche Factory dealer only
Gymkana event at Mid-Ohio race track I placed 2nd to a real hot shot driver.
Oh forget it was 928 Gymkana event & we ran the Dial turbo 911-935s w/factory werks drivers also.
In comparison we ran against BMW MERCEDES & CORVETTE
Other drivers blew the Corvette clutch the Mercedes was Rolled & the BMW survived.
It was 928 introduction Factory event to top dealers at Mid-Ohio on the improved S4 model as sales had been lagging.
My street racing skills came into play on Gymkana event.
The Hot shot driver was good really good very impressive skills. 👏🏼
I never thanked my friend for destroying the engine on my 928.
I loved the car for its cool looks and smooth engine. I would still have it today, if it ran.
When I gave the car away, I never looked back.
What a piece of well-engineered garbage.
I didn’t mention that the timing belt broke and destroyed the engine.
And that’s the car’s fault? Sounds more like deferred maintenance.
So, what is the car parked next to it in the garage??
Maybe one of those Ford/Jaguars??
Article didn’t answer its own question.
BTW, I won a game of checkers against a Checkers Master. It was amazing!!
I see a Viper.
