Garage-Kept 1970 Mercury Cougar

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Mercury Cougar was one of Lincoln-Mercury’s best-selling cars in the ’60s and ’70s and was named Motor Trend Car of The Year in ’67. If anything made you cool in the ’70s it was owning one of these stylish and speedy cars. In 1970 the Cougar underwent some cosmetic style updates that would differentiate it from the first generation. This 1970 Mercury Cougar is listed on craigslist in West Hollywood, California for $23,500. Thanks to T.J. for the tip.

The car is finished in what appears to be factory “Bright Gold” with a black vinyl top. The body appears to be in great condition with some small blemishes in line with the car’s age. The car’s wheels look to be factory and in good condition as well. The Cougar is said to be free of rust and has been in storage for over 25 years.

The car’s interior is finished in factory Medium Ginger Corinthian vinyl with Medium Ginger Houndstooth pattern cloth. The dash, center column, and steering wheel are all finished in a matching factory color. The interior seems to be in good condition although there is some damage on the base of the driver’s seat and there is likely some minor age-related damage throughout.

A 351c Cleveland V8 sends power to the rear wheels via an automatic transmission. The seller notes that the transmission needs some work. The car is said to lag and leak due to a possible transmission gasket failure. The Cougar’s engine was rebuilt and the seller has receipts of all work done. The car has recently received new spark plugs, a timing chain, a sending unit, an Edelbrock carburetor, and an oil change. With a little work, this Cougar could be back to a near-factory state. It’s perfect for anyone who wants something to drive and enjoy immediately or someone who is looking to put in a little extra work to perfect it. If you are interested in owning this ’70s king reach out to the seller on craigslist.

This year was my favorite of the Cougars, this one however doesn’t trip any triggers. The asking price is high considering the overall condition. The interior shows wear, but worst is under the hood. Too many modifications. It appears there is a missing A/C compressor, but that’s not all. All of the A/C plumbing is missing. I can’t tell if the condenser is there. It appears the heater core has also been bypassed so no heat or A/C. The after market ignition is sloppy. Nothing here that’s not fixable. Just not worth $23.5k the way it sits.

Lot’s of rust under the vinyl top and below the back window that looks to have penetrated to the headliner inside. Sloppy repaint on the front fender fillers. No way that’s 43k
