Gated Manual Cabrio: 1996 Ferrari F355

There was  time when automotive journalists claimed that the Ferrari F355 had depreciated enough to put it into the price range of mere mortals. The F355 has clearly left the depreciation station and values have climbed significantly, likely past the point of no return. It’s amazing how you can tell when some vehicles are clearly never going to be cheap ever again, owing to their desirable qualifies that are no longer in strong supply, such as a Ferrari with the manual gated shifter. This F355 Spyder is listed here on eBay with the sought-after six-speed manual and under 40,000 miles, with bids currently sitting at $66,766.

When the F355 was introduced, it came at a time when the motoring world was more or less disappointed with the 348, another mid-engined, V8-powered Ferrari. The car was underwhelming to many at the same, and certainly felt like much too big of a drop in driving excitement from the likes of the iconic F40 and Testarossa; yes, it was an entry-level Ferrari, but it seemed to remind drivers of this status in both build quality and the experience from the cockpit. The F355 left a much smaller gulf between it and the more powerful offerings, along with great styling and a smartly-designed soft top.

Of course, like every mid-engined Ferrari, service history is one of your biggest cost areas and opportunities for negotiation if you’re looking to drive the price down; however, if my past experience is any indication, paying up front for a detailed service history versus attempting to negotiate the price downward and then paying for the $10,000 – $15,000 engine-out belt servicing is far preferred. You usually don’t save as much on the offer price as you’d like and the cost to bring it to a local shop is almost always higher than you bargained for. Fortunately, the seller performed a belt servicing in August 2024, so you won’t have to worry about a major service immediately after purchase.

Early in the F355’s history, bronze valve guides had a tendency to prematurely fail, so you may want to ask the seller what their experience has been in this area. As a car with low miles and that has been in a private collection, any signs of wear and tear are nominal at best, so this example certainly presents well in photos, and in a very classic color scheme of Rosso Corsa Red over tan connolly leather. Of course, the gated manual shifter is a huge value driver here, and will ensure this Ferrari continues to climb in the ensuing years. As they say, the cheapest day to buy one is today.

    Yeah, you gotta keep those gear shifts levers fenced in. Also, I’m sure your Ferrari is best kept in a gated community. I would definitely drive this cabrio around the arena!

    If sticks are in short supply and are so desirable, why are they not made anymore?

      Not as fast as the F1 tranny, so they opted for performance over all else.

      When there is a choice (up until the last F430, I think), the gated manuals are sought after.

    Ferrari began F355 production in 1994 (’95 models), but didn’t introduce the F1 transmission until 1997. As far as rarity and desirability, of the 11,000+ Berlinetta, Spyder, and GTS F355s produced, only a little over 1,600 had the F1 trans (according to Wikipedia). So, I’m not sure the fact that this is a gated 355 will be a huge driver of the sales price.
