This is no barn find or even a survivor, but it’s just too much fun to pass up! How often do you see a Soap Box Derby Racer with a Chevy V6? This little roadster actually looks more like a Pinewood Derby car than a Soapbox Racer. Ask any Cub Scout Parent and they’ll likely have one or two displayed somewhere. It’s listed on eBay with an opening bid of $13,995 with no bids yet. It’s in Maytown, Pennsylvania and ends on Sunday.
This is a bit more plush than your everyday racer. The steering wheel appears uncomfortably offset. It appears your forays will be limited to sunny days by yourself. It’s accumulated only 152 lonely miles since completion.
Here’s the Chevy 4.3 liter V6. This should get it uphill easily. While it’s no performance monster, it’s more than enough engine for something this small.
The little roadster shows signs of having been well built on the underside as well. That’s a Speedway T chassis.
This would surely get your attention from the rear as well. There are pesky regulations in some states that would encourage fenders. There are not likely many folks who would like to take this home but it looks like big fun. Perhaps there’s a devoted Cub Scout dad who would like his own Pinewood Derby Racer. This little roadster will likely get lots of attention at any car show.
i can see 2000$ but who would buy his price is insane.
There will be no bids. Ugly!
I admire the tenacity it took to create but I see no value here
You can see the workmanship and the creativity is over the top. With that said, it seems the practicality is a little lower, its way cool, but what can you do with it. From that point of view, I hate to say it, but I would have a difficult justifying the price.
You have to appreciate this for what it is: a bit of fun. Not every car on the planet has to be practical. We all need room for fun in our lives, and this looks like it would be awesomely good fun. I suspect that it may surprise a few people, because I suspect that it would have a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio.
Don’t take everything too seriously folks. None of us get out of this alive.
I’d put a split V shaped windshield on it and some prowler styled fenders in dark chocolate brown. It is clearly a quality build, and something that a lot of you armchair mechanics could not would not attempt. My hat is off to this builder for his vision and follow through. My guess is that this is a blast to drive.
Trippy car – seems like it would be a screamer considering the power to weight ration – but sure wouldn’t want to get hit! Otherwise, haven’t though of the Pinewood Derby in years. Won it two of the three years I was a Cub Scout. Drilled holes in the wood body and put in fishing lead to bring the weight up to the max allowed; put the wheel nails in a drill chuck and polished them with crocus cloth, then used a drill bit to clean up the inside of the wheels and plenty of graphite for lube (thanks Dad!).
Bravo to the Over-Acheiving-Cub Scout who built this. Well done!
Reminds me of the Cyclekarts that are built. But I believe this would blow their doors off!
I like it. I’d drive it. If I had too much money, I’d probably pay for it. Nice build.
