Grandfather’s Project: 1971 AMC Javelin SST

As I hear more and more about individuals who take on a project only to see it remain unfinished decades later, I get nervous about my tendency to acquire vehicles needing a fair amount of work. It has to be difficult looking at a stalled project like this 1971 AMC Javelin SST that was completely disassembled and repainted only to realize you’re not going to finish it. The Javelin is listed here on craigslist for $9K with the seller noting his grandfather drove it home off the lot in 1971.

The Javelin has stayed in the family since then, passing onto to different family members. That makes this doubly hard to see, as the Javelin will leave this long-term family ownership for the first time. The major restoration begin in 2014, when the body was repainted, new graphics were seemingly applied, and the seller even had the car running. It’s been in the garage for 20 years and restoration work has since stalled.

The seller notes the rear center tail lens has gone astray, but all other parts needed to finish the car are included. It’s hard to tell the quality of the paintwork from here, but if you’re in New England, the Javelin is located somewhere in New Hampshire for an in-person inspection. The seller explains that his military career makes it difficult to find time to finish the car, and family emergencies have also played a role.

I’ve begun taking a shine to Javelins as sort of the individual’s choice for muscle car ownership. This 1969 AMC Javelin SST is a Barn Finds Exclusive listed as part of the large Georgia collection we’ve been helping to clean out. This car also needs finishing, with a 343 engine and automatic transmission needing reassembly and a paint job if you’re a perfectionist – and it definitely needs a graphics kit.

I agree with Jeff, it is sad to see what could have been a great restoration stall and become neglected for many reasons. I have an in-heart love affair with Javelins and AMX’s. Sure wish I could get my hands on one, finish it and drive it. No trailer queens for me. As the old saying goes, “Ya gotta drive ’em.”

People seriously underestimate the time and effort and focus and intelligence required to rebuild a car.
Especially if one has to hunt around for parts.
I dismantled my first car in 1970 for a rebuild. sold it in bits three years later. That was enough to tell me that I don’t have what it takes.

Nice looking car and the paint looks good from the pictures!! I never had one of these cars but really wouldn’t mind!! I really hope the body work was done well and it’s not a pig with lipstick on!! I’m sure there are parts available but I don’t know of any company’s selling fenders or quarters for these!! After all it is above the snow belt!!!

They do make aftermarket rockers and quarters for these cars. They’re not exact, but they do make them. Guess what I had to replace on my AMX? haha
