Granny’s Grocery Getter: 1995 Chevrolet Caprice Wagon

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Excuse me for making a trip down Nostalgia Lane, but coming from a family that had two station wagons in the driveway in the 50’s and 60’s, this big, beautiful behemoth just speaks to me. The days of full-sized, body on frame, rear wheel drive station wagons were numbered in the 1990’s. Ford had stopped making them after the 1991 model year, but Chevrolet continued for a few more years. This is an extremely well-preserved 1995, one of only 5,030 produced that model year (the next year would be the end of an era with only 485 final full-sized Caprice Wagon’s produced for 1996). The seller states that this clean example was purchased from the original owner, a 90-year-old lady who used to drive it from Indiana to her house in Florida. Currently located in Lagrange, Ohio, this ’95 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Wagon is for sale here on eBay. As of this writing it had generated 11 bids with $10,700 being the top bid.

This has classic full-sized station wagon written all over it: big (217.3″ long), roomy, comfy, with acres of faux wood grain vinyl on the sides and dressy wire wheel covers.  Its overall condition leads one to believe it has spent a lot of time in a garage and out of the harsh elements the past 28 years. Based on a color chart I found online, it’s painted in Light Driftwood Metallic, an appropriate name and color for such an All-American wagon. I can’t spot any major issues on the exterior of this time capsule. The paint, faux wood trim, and glass (which is tinted) all look very good. The seller states there are “bumps on the bumper, a scratch on the rear pillar, and the rear passenger window tint has a scratch in it.” The underneath is clean with typical surface rust and the spare tire well has a patch on it which the seller (who has owned 10 of these Caprice Wagons) says is typical for these cars.

Like the wagon’s outside, the cabin of this Caprice Wagon is impressive and well-preserved. The next owner better like brown as the driftwood brown and tan theme continues inside with deeply cushioned cloth seats, a two-toned brown instrument panel, carpeting, and door panels. No details are given by the seller but these big wagons came loaded with creature comforts including AC, an AM/FM/cassette sound system, power locks, tilt wheel, tinted glass, map pockets in the door panels (no GPS navigation!), intermittent wipers and more. I’m not spotting any major wear and tear or evidence that Grandma hauled a wagon full of rambunctious youngsters around in her Caprice Wagon.

And check out the third row rear-facing vinyl bench seat. It looks like this area was rarely occupied by kids and when folded down, it created a ton of cargo bay space behind the middle bench seat. The Wagon also has a double-hinged rear door that can be folded down as a loading platform or swung out like a door for entering and exiting the rear seat.

Like the rest of this station wagon, the engine compartment is very clean and tidy. The seller states there’s 85,900 miles on the 5.7L V8 that’s mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Based on the condition of this Caprice, I’d say those are the original miles. Yeah, changing times (especially the introduction of the minivan in the early ’80’s) meant the days of old school, full-sized station wagons were numbered once the 1990’s rolled around. But they went out with a big hoorah as evidenced by this pampered, well-preserved Caprice Wagon.

Beautiful looking car. I remember when this generation Chevy Caprice was introduced. I remember thinking “It’s about damn time Chevy updated the car.” I’d have bought a Chevy Caprice had I been in the market to buy a car. My favourite style for the car was the station wagon. Given the condition, and assuming maintenance has been performed throughout the life of the car, I’d be willing to pay around $10k for the car.

I have two ‘95-96 Roadmaster wagons.
One modified to terrorize the rice burners, the other as from factory. Both look stock.
The modified runs an LS3 with a blower, upgrades to suspension/brakes/tires/rear end, etc and dynoed at 550hp.
Too damn much fun and really good MPG too!

These were the last of station/wagons every built, some people really like these, because the are rear/wheel drive, l probably would prefer 68-72 Chevelle Wagons, as these are vintage, and parts are easier to find.

      I agree. I’ve always liked old-school cars. I’d buy a 1971 Chevelle wagon.
