And now for something from the “What in the Sam Hill happened?” department. Nevadahalfrack discovered the listing for this 1968 Porsche 911 L Targa, and he asks the valid question, “Can someone explain why this is $7,000??!!? There’s nothing left of this 1968 911 L Targa.” Well, let’s give it a review and see if we can answer that question. This pile-o-parts Porsche is located in Los Angeles, California and is available here on eBay for a BIN price of $6,700. There is a make-an-offer option too.
The Porsche 911 L was a short-lived model, offered in ’68 only – and in this case, it’s a Targa body style with a (permanently?) removable roof panel. According to Sportscar Market, of the 16,934 911s assembled in ’68, 6,672 were Targa models, and of that total, the 911 L comprised 5,134 copies. So rare? Not really, uncommon maybe. The seller tells us, this Porsche “WAS INVOLVED IN COLLISION IN 1973.” Further added is, “A VERY SPECIAL CAR IN PORSCHE HISTORY THAT WILL GO UP IN VALUE FAST. IT IS AROUND 150K + GOING UP FOR RESTORED DRIVER. A SHOW CAR OVER 350K. GREAT INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY.” And then there’s some business about the Tangerine color, what little is still there, being rare. Instead of paraphrasing the listing, I’ll convey to you the seller’s assessment, “FRONT NOSE SECTION IS CUT, NO GLASS, WENT WINDOW FRAMES BENT, WHITE LEFT EXTRA DOOR SHELL INCLUDED TO REPLACE A DAMAGE ONE, ALL INTACT. NEED SOME REPAIR ON BOTTOM, NO REAR TRUNK LID, NO BUMPERS, NICE STAINLESS TARGA BAR, ON (sic) SPARE WHEELS, NO BRAKES, WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET, ROLLS AND STEARS (sic).” But other than that…this is basically a 1968 Porsche 911 L VIN for sale, oh, and with a modicum of “rare” Tangerine paint – that’s about it. The seller adds, “Not a rust bucket.”
Power was originally provided by a 128 HP (approximate), 2.0-liter, flat, six-cylinder engine attached to a five-speed manual transaxle. Of course, those components, as expected, are on the no-show list (but hey, it rolls and steers).
As for the interior, there isn’t one. The floors are gone, though it appears that the steering tiller (remember, this one rolls and steers!) is still in place. The center tunnel is said to be sound, but I’m wondering what’s holding it in place.
I could say this one leaves me speechless, but it doesn’t – nothing from an old car hobby/collector perspective surprises me anymore. Perhaps a restored 911 L Targa will bring the big bucks, but how many of those will be needed to turn this pile back into a car? And that’s assuming that it’s even possible. I dunno about this one, talk among yourselves, please.

Even a bean can manufacturer wouldn’t be interested in this one.
Not much left of it.
No legitimate reason to purchase it.
They’ll pay someone how much to haul it away???
……but,but,but…..it’s air cooled!
From every conceivable direction!
Hey fellow car enthusiasts!! I would buy the 911 just for the Title and Vin tag. Could be usefull somewhere. 007 kind of thing!! Good Day!!!
From every conceivable direction!
Might take $350k to restore it.
The Baja Bug 911. Very rare, indeed.
I’ll Stear clear of this one and keep rolling.
C’mon, it only needs everything, stop crying and buy it already…
I’m not sure what kind of meds this seller is taking , but he/she needs to see the doctor and get the dosage adjusted because it’s affecting their perception of reality. Good grief! 🤯
Tragedy
I was excited, until I saw that the VIN tag was too far gone.
“Not a rust bucket.”
I don’t think there is enough left to rust.
Hey ! would somebody please pay me to haul away my scrap ?
Oh, come on now, this can not be a serious ad. It must be some jokers idea of humorous. Wasn’t there a gag song in the sixties with the verse “their coming to take us away ha ha”? The verse applies here.
Could have been the same guy who, in the 50’s was counting flowers on his wall, smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo.
That don’t bother me at all, playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51
Jeez, probably can’t even truthfully say, “Ran when parked” on this one. Make it make sense.
Don’t laff! Someone is itching to buy this! Is it you?
Barf
OMG… what a piece of crap. Why do people even bother?
This is the dilapidated sort of car my dad would have said didn’t have enough metal left to make a razor blade.
Is this the very rare dune-buggy conversion?
This is leftover from the auction of that gigantic Porsche and exotic auction from last October. No doubt detritus from that event will be in circulation for years being sold and resold.
