We all know that everyone loves green cars, not to mention cars with four doors; this one has it all! This 1976 Ford Maverick is posted on Craigslist with an asking price of $3,500 and that’s a $500 price reduction. It’s located in the capital city of Kansas – Topeka. Thanks to Pat L for sending in this one!
The seller has had this nice Maverick for the last decade and it still has just 24,654 miles on it. 1977 was the last year for the Maverick and you can see that the bumpers have gotten pretty huge by then.
The features of this car could go either way, hard. It depends on if a person like things a little different or not. I do, so I like four doors, a dark green color, and a vinyl top. A lot of folks won’t even give a four-door car a second glance, let alone one with a vinyl top.
The interior is where this car really shines, no fresh-car-wash pun intended. Those seats are fantastic! And, in fantastic condition. They have the whole car listed as being in “excellent” condition and from what is shown in the photos, other than of course no engine photos, it does look very nice. The engine is listed as a “6 cylinder” so it has to be either a 200 cubic-inch inline-six with around 80 hp or a 260 cubic-inch inline-six also with around 80 hp. This one has the cruise-o-matic automatic transmission, so that’s another love-it-or-hate-it feature, or drawback, of this car. I think this is a pretty appealing Maverick, are there any other fans of these Maverick sedans out there?
I now know who bought those leftover highway guard rails from 70″s
I like Mavericks but this one is everything I wouldn’t want in a Maverick 4 doors / vinyl roof / 6 banger but I can handle the green. Also would have to do something about the bumper.
make a good daily driver, thats about it…maybe worth that much to a hardcore Maverick lover. not to me…
The 200 was rated at 85 hp and the 250 at 99 hp. Torque was 156 and 184. If you keep it stock, it’ll work fine, and that’s likely what the future owner will do. I like Ford 6s and they can be warmed over and fun but it needs to be the right car for that and I’m not convinced this is. An early Falcon or Comet? Sure! A Maverick that’s all stock in this condition? Nah. Leave it stock and as a “driver.”
Beauty remains in the eye of the beholder
The owner is slick, he wet it down to make it shine.no wax on it as the water sheets off it. my dads friend had a comet like this he was short and very fat and he drove with a bath towel over his stomach so the wheel would not chafe him
Ditto on the wet pictures. I appreciate the car for what it is. The seller should have spent an hour or two with a inexpensive clay bar, nano wax, tire shine and Armour All.
Jesus, look at those bars – I’ll buy it
Oh, man! That’s hilarious!
I’d use that as a DD. My wife said she learned to drive in a white 4 dr Mav. Yes the bumpers are ponderous. But I’ve read the small ones will fit if you can find the stuff to convert. I like this one as good as any Mavs posted recently. Seems like a good idea. No worse than a 4 door car thats 15 years old for the same money. Should be easy to work on. With it’s age, may not have to have smog inspection, leaving room for mods to the 6 or a little 302 in there. Paint look reasonably intact. Might be a candidate for a clear coat? Move on and drive it.
All the folks that think they are ugly b/c of bumpers or 4 doors just make them more affordable for folks that don’t care about such.
what is it with you posters and mavericks? if you want one that badly then buy one and then you’ll be over it the next day.
seriously, friend had one in hs and I drove it a time or two. completely forgettable transportation.
I’ll tolerate just about any vehicle – everyone has their own tastes.
But I’m hoping that BF will get over this Maverick kick soon.
My ex-MIL had a car like this. $100 dollar beater at the time (’90’s) I remember the floor under the back seat was rusted through, and the seat layed on the emergency brake cables, burning out the back brakes. She only drove it a few miles a day, everyday, had no heat, and we’d all chuckle when “Ma” pulled in with her hat, scarf and mittens on.( in retrospect, I should have fixed the heater for her, but I had problems of my own) The Maverick was a very popular car, For people with “Pinto” mindset, but needed a 6 passenger car, this was it. Again, unwashed, unmaintained, unloved, but got Ma to Sears everyday, like it was supposed to do. It was a step up from her Vega, for sure.
My Father in law loved new Studebakers and AMC’s, such as his 1962 Rambler American Convertible with flat head six, automatic and vacuum wipers. When my Wife got her first car, he headed to the Rambler dealership, she said no and ended up with a new 1967 Barracuda fastback.
When her sister got divorced for the second time, he “helped” her shop and got a new 76 or 77 Maverick 4 door. She had four kids! The perfect purchase; a car that did not fit her needs, and which she could not afford.
In addition it was strangled by emission controls (claimed 80 HP) got poor mileage around town and was not reliable. I worked for a company that had several of these 1975 to 1976 Mavericks in its fleet. They were all nasty.
I’d keep the bumpers. It is what it is. It’s a piece of history just like any other car. If this pulled up beside me is say, whoa look at those bumpers, cool.
I would keep the big bumpers just so other drivers would have to think twice before cutting me off. And yes, I would not touch the brakes. Would probably touch the gas pedal.
Holy park benches.
It’s former commoness and everyday car of the past should be kept. I’ll bet you take it to a cruise night or show and more people stop to talk.
I had a light green 1975 Maverick fordor I bought in 1988 with 115,000 miles on it for $650. Three years later, I junked it at 210,000 miles. In 1992, I bought a dark “forest green” (like the one featured except no vynal top) 1977 Maverick tudor with 17,000 original miles for $1000. I sold it five years later with 156,000 miles for $150 (the engine was smoking from constant stop and go use). To me, they were great cars, though the gas mileage was poor for a small car. Me, I liked those 5 mile an hour bumpers (both front and rear) that were legally required from 1974 to 1981(In 1973, the standard was 2 1/2 mph front and rear). I also owned another 1981 vehicle that I had a couple of 5 mile an hour impacts, with no damage. And then, in 1982, “Reagan Abomination” relaxed the bumper standard ever since. Oh well, the heavier beefier bumpers did make it more difficult to meet the CAFÉ standard. C’est la vie!
I’d buy one if I were in the market for one. I’ve always loved 4-door Ford Mavericks and Mercury Comet.
#obsessedwithmavericks!
Nice car I will move that huge bumper closer to the body
and the look will change to a pretty looking nice Maverick
I would not buy it just because he wet it down before taking pictures.
